A lot of talking is going on about the player base development in MWO, especially with the numbers published by Steam. Since we got the Leaderboards we can finally check the real activity across the boards. After 4 Seasons I think it is reasonable to underlie all the talking with some basic facts.

I put the Leaderboard in the order of Matches and always used the first row figure. In my opinion this gives a pretty good indication of the activity of the player base.
Season 1 was longer than the following ones ( I think, please correct me if I am wrong) and the leader of the played matches is usually an extreme outlier.
These figures do not reflect activity in FW.

Let´s try to analyse this:
There are roughly 30.000 accounts showing regular activity every month.
There are more than 50.000 acounts logging in each month.
Number of logged in accounts decreased.

The number of active accounts stabilized and increased their activity.
Especially the average players picked up their activity in season 4 and overcame even season 1 in the lower number of matches bracket.
The daily events had positive effects on the activity of the player base.
If the FW event in Season 3 is responsible for the drop in games in pubic queue could be investigated.

All in all. Summer is over, activity is rising but it is not sure yet if this was a onetime effect of the recent events. The player base is not growing but stable. Doomsday is definitely not here yet but the growth of the game has stopped (if there was one after steam release).
The daily events had a positive effect and kept many players motivated to play. Whether this is a one-trickpony or if PGI runs this until we all burn out... the future will show.

i will keep this thread updated as time allows. I will not update the front page though.

If anyone wants the figures to play around, here you go:

If PGI could develop some PVE coop missions, it should help out with the casual player base numbers. Massive games like CS:GO and League of Legends have done good work in catering to their casual player base. In MWO, casual players are getting thrown into tier 1 games where they are grinded to a pulp. As a tier 1 player, I have to say that it really isn't all that fun for anyone involved.

B-b-but Steam numbers!

Good work, dude. I don't mind doom and gloom, as long as it's based on reliable statistics. And I've argued for some time that while MWO is dying, it's rather a longer and more uneventful death than some people would have you believe. I'll be sure to post a link to this thread in the next "MWO is dying" thread that comes along. Shouldn't be too long :)

too bad we can't pull useful data from the old leaderboard events. But you'd need to find a person that scored the lowest in each to get the total players involved.

I wonder why PGI wants to keep that data so close to the vest.

The Steam numbers are a bummer for sure. Not terribly surprising either.

Just as a side note though. Some of the veterans like myself that have been around before the Steam launch might still be using the MWO launcher instead of Steam. If a lot of players are still using the MWO launcher, it will skew the numbers downward.

This isn't saying it isn't telling though. Many new players probably use Steam and it can be an indicator of new player retention (more so than total player activity). It's hard to say.

UPDATE: Nevermind, I talked before paying attention to what I was looking at. Thought they were Steam numbers for some reason.

These are not Steam numbers. These are figures taken from the Leaderboard that registers matches regardeless if you log in with Steam or the traditional launcher.

Excellent work! The only thing that would be missing from those numbers would be people who play only FW, assuming there are any. Posted Image

Thank you for quantifying what my qualitative gut has been saying for a long time.

Dying, no.
Thriving, no.
Stable. meh

I think there's some irony here, but the last 4 months have been stable. It's the ~5 or so months since the Steam launch that there was a steady decline.

I don't think it would take much to destabilize outside of the "announcements @ Mechcon". It's easier to prepare for disappointment.

It's weird that I play, but am not ranked on any Leaderboard, and I don't play FP.

A Season 5 just started, so if you haven't played a game today, you wont be listed. Use the dropdown menu to select a previous season.

No we don't. I very rarely play at all anymore and my spending is zero. I don't want to play team solo match.
