There is a book about the BattleTech Universe. It should show you what's going on, what nations exist in the game, and example of some prominent BattleMechs.

That's a pretty good summary, but rather on the long side, but it's worth the time

there are a couple short Youtube vids that explain the universe from around the time of the Star League (when mechs first show up) right up to the Clan invasion (where we are now)

They should not be hard to find
