I was just thinking about the sound effects in this game. I really feel they need a revamp.

I'll take the IS weapons for example...

The UAC5 sounds like it's saying "Jam" everytime you fire it... then it jams ;)
The AC10 sounds pathetic. It's not really a bad weapon but the sound comparing to the AC20 the sound differences are ridiculous.
AC20... sweet :)

Small lasers from both sides. This needs changing, it sounds like it's robots tickling other robots.

I can go on and on but I won't.

The other thing that bugs me, I cannot seem to find a way of getting real 5.1 working. Has anyone managed this?

If it's not supported, this is way overdue (and 7.1 support). I remember playing battlefield in true 5.1 and it was too good (on headphones and speakers).

I agree completely.

To me, personally, the worst offenders are:
  • AC2 sound. Used to be so awesome. Now it sounds like someone banging an empty metal drum with a stick.
  • PPC sound. Sounds like someone smashing a window with a cabinet of porcelain. The recharge sound is cool though.
  • Clan streaks. I don't even know what that sounds like. It's terrible.
  • MGs. They actually sound like MGs, but just not very impressive ones. Certianly don't sound like 500 kg machine guns.
In my opinion, some of the laser sounds are better now than they were before. But I preferred most of the old sounds for ballistics, ppcs and missiles.

Unless PGI's sound design somehow gets REALLY good, I'm sticking with this.

I always use Mechwarrior 2 sounds mods by Shivaxi. Because it sounds much better, Betty voices is more awesome and also there's musics. Because MW:O weapon sounds are weird, like autocannon sounds like someone dropped their bucket and it feels bland without music.

I would very much like it if they introduced some new soundtrack to the game.. the home tab music is getting kinda stale..

The sound effects are fine, I would not change them.

Just add some music..

Best laser / missile sound mod:

I wish we had a larger sound-mod community.

I'd like a full weapon-conversion sound mod that has better SFX. I don't really like the MW2/3 sounds any more than MWO's.

There are plenty of games with decent weapon sounds.. it would just take someone to browse tons of modern shooters and be motivated to collate samples and pak them up.

Just so you all realize, sound mods are illegal according to the CoC's, and can get you banned. It's come up before (subject of sound mods), and Dev's have confirmed it is considered an illegal game file mod.

Do so at your own peril.

Yeaaah, the sound design in the game is... weak.
Especially on the IS side.

A bit to much Star Wars for me Posted Image

But a sound overhaul would be much appreciated.

What about a MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries one?

Always liked that Gauss "Tjoof!".

I thought the devs had said sound mods are ok.

Glad's someones cleared up whether we're allowed to modify the sounds, I am going to give the MW2 sound replacement out tonight. I am not impressed with the current sound effects and at least I can capture some nostalgia :)

Anyone know anything about getting true 5.1 / 7.1 working ?

I am the only one who have AC sound super loud when spectating someone else? I always have to lower the volume when spectating daka.

Yep the entire sound end of the game needs work. Some are great, some are bad like inner sphere ac and laser fx or lacking like music variety.

I guess lasers dont realistically make much sound at all. But some of the MWO laser sounds, sounds kinda odd, like synthezised guitar strings.
And overall, the ballistics need more OMMPH!, i love the ac 20 sounds and the clan mg sounds. Now regarding the machine guns they need to be more useful to fit an improved sound set.
And yeah MWO needs more music! For example the themes from the early promotionals being optional to play under the game.

BTW any full MW 4 soundmods out there?

The super heated air would make a sound. The release of that much energy would also, even if inside the mech itself.

I love MW2, but that game is in mono man... Everything sounds like it's all happening inside the cockpit because there's no direction to it. I at least need stereo sounds... (but I would totally use a stereo version of MW2 sounds Posted Image )

-Edit-
Found this from 2014. Lasers are pretty much silent...

OMFG I am shocked it is the very first time I have read/heard of this!

MW2's Betty messages and warnings are FAR SUPERIOR to MWO's. You don't even need to glance at your mech status diagram because it tells you "critical hit, left torse," "weapon destroyed," etc.
And the missile lock warning has the serious "I'm not shɨtting you TAKE COVER NOW" warning buzzer.
Oh it brings back good memoriesPosted Image
If it's not against the EULA I plan to install this for sure.

I agree that laser sounds in MWO are kinda weak. I like the pulse laser sound though.
MWO's sounds are definitely better than MW3's and 4's (4's gauss rifle sounded like some kid put his ear to a steel cable and hit it with a rock).
To date I haven't played a single game where the laser sound effect was both 'realistic' and cool/strong sounding. I guess it's another reason I've never really liked laser weapons in video games.
But I think I'm sold on Shivaxi's mod. Posted Image
