Woot! My SECOND brilliant idea of the day...

This time, utilizing the default rocket for soft landing.

Basically, the mechanics work as follow. Every 10 seconds of so, there is one additional meter that slowly recharges and fill. When the bar is fill, you can double tap left or right to perform an emergency sidestep boost (imagine like a short hop). The distance is not long, just 10 meters or so, but it is sudden.

You can utilize this in many ways. For example, if you accidentally round the wrong corner, quickly use this to get back into cover (though you will want to orient your mech first, so that your side boost doesn't bring you closer to the enemy)

OR

Imagine incoming LRMs, and at the last second, fast position change that caused the missiles to be unable to change flight path and miss.

OR

Sudden side strafe to bring that pesky light to forefront. (and if you are a pesky light, a well-timed counter to that counter)

This default robot booster assisted jumpstep is of course, 100% unrelated to your real jumpjet. It does not give you any elevation (well, maybe the 1 meter necessary to clear surface).

Actually, I change my mind. If this is directional... double tap forward or double tap back...

Either way, it will be cool to see battlemechs performing more like...future robots than 21st century tanks with wheels.

Lights that can't ever be hit will be the new meta. Because dealing with HSR and Hit Detection works so well already...

*Redneck screeching*

"KEEP YOUR DIRTY GUNDAYUM JAPONESE NONSENSE OUT OF MUH MURICAN MUSCLE STEEL! BIG V8 ENGINES ARE THE ONLY WAY!"

But in all seriousness, sideboosting like that would be fine if it comes with the condition that you have to REALLY FIGHT INERTIA after the action. Sure you can shift velocity sideways, but once you do, you are teetering trying to recover balance. (i.e. extreme throttle sluggishness after use.)

Or else this becomes Armored Core 4 levels of blinding flashes of quickboosts. PS2 Era levels of boosting would be acceptable.

Not quite. Although it would be pretty cool to have the functionality of MW2 jump jets. Imagine if it was like this.
1 jump jet: Only forward thrust.
2 jump jets: Forward or backward thrust.
4 jump jets: Ability to rotate in air.
6+ jump jets: Ability to side-strafe in air.

I was thinking this exact thing while my Viper slowly glided down into the enemy team.

Directional Jumpjets were a thing in MW2. Summoners and Novas were particularly handy as they could hit speeds of 200kph burning around the map with JJs.

To be fair, battletech purists who want stompy heavy master race all day erryday have a point, with this example.

Imagine how bad latency will be when the space that changes between entities changes at a much greater rate.

Why not just use those fancy leg things to flex inwards and outwards a bit at the hip, lending to strafing-type motion?

I wouldnt have any problems if this was a ligth and some special medium mechanic only, maybe that would bring ligths back to life again
