Yes -20% energy heat is pretty substantial...if you dont have to sacrifice a lot for it. So yea put -20% energy heat on something like the EBJ or timberwolf and it makes a huge differrence, apply it to the summoner with one or two energy hardpoints and its really meh. And the EBJ will still run 2x er PPC cooler.

Do the math on what -15% or -20% gives you. If you run Clan laser vomit the Timby can't keep up-- it simply doesn't have the tonnage for the extra 7-8 DHS that you would need. The Ebon can, but it's a glass cannon. Also, when running ERPPCs vs the Ebon Jag we're talking massive advantages in velocity and cooldown, not to mention JJs, structure, accel/decel, turn, etc.

I guess the extra side torso energy hardpoints help somewhat, but the summoner will always remain a sub optimal choice if other chassis can do the same (or nearly the same) thing, but better. And IMHO no chassis should have omni pods that are pretty much a "must have".

I've run 2 ERPPCs in the arms forever. "Sub-optimal" lol. Have you ever piloted this mech?

It depends on what you define as better. If you really want the JJs or velocity quirk, ok. But the EBJ has its own set of advantages, and more important since it can run more DHS, it runs a LOT cooler.

No it doesn't run a "LOT cooler." The more energy weapons you throw on the more those heat gen quirks benefit the SMN. Do the math on 2LPL+ 4ERML laser vomit. The Ebon Jag can just edge the SMN, but to do so you give up JJs and all the other quirks.

But thats just hypothethical anyway, 2x erppcs is really low damage for a 70 tonner, especially when you cant even fire 3 alphas in a row without overheating (according to the calculations in li song's mechlab anyway).

Again, have you piloted this mech to any substantial degree? The SMN got a bad rep specifically because of the attitude you display: that a heavy must be a big-alpha line mech. The loyalty ST pods make it more viable in that role now, but otherwise you've got to play it as a poptarter and flanker. If you play it right it's an absolute beast.

They are not popular for a reason, you see people bring good mechs all the time in higher tiers, faction play, the group queue, etc, because they are good and actually work. You see people bring junk mechs a lot less often in higher tiers.

How long has it been since you've played? Good players are bringing Summoners a lot more now. Good players were bringing Summoners before. It wasn't popular because the playstyle and skills required to make it shine were beyond the abilities of the average potato. It's not an "easy-mode" mech; you have to work to make it perform.

If you are sastified with spending 70 tons to have a 20 point alpha + some minor splash damage, ok, but that's something you can do with a 45 ton shadowcat (2x ER LL have a 22 point alpha). People are not impressed by a LRM Atlas for the same reason : its a horribly inefficient use of tonnage.

Im up to 88 quick play matches since i started playing again and i honestly cannot recall any summoners that have actually made me sit up and take notice (most were the 2x er ppc build). They just do not have sufficient firepower to prove threatening and i love running into Summoners, because unlike most heavies, they can't put up much of a fight. But its entirely possible that i may have simply not run into any "good" summoner pilots or luck was just against them that time. Maybe its a build that is mostly effective in faction play where you can have 12 mechs line up and camp a choke point, but nobody plays faction warfare during oceanic prime time so i cant comment on that.

If you think it works great for you, go ahead and keep using it, im not trying to stop you.

The alpha isn't the point, its the accuracy and sustainability and agility and good hardpoint placement. In the right hands its really good. We are just trying to inform you since you have been away for a while. If you want to reject knowledge I guess we can't stop you. Here's an example of a standout summoner performance:

Jun: by the time you "run into" me your CT will be cracked wide open because I've been popping you from 1000m out with two gauss-velocity ERPPCs. You keep thinking in terms of pure alpha when there's so much more at play. The tankiness and playstyle often leads to you surviving until the endgame, at which point 2 ERPPCs as scary as hell, even in a brawl.

"70 tons"-- with 85-tonner structure, 55-tonner agility, and the best long-range reach in the game.

What's the current status on the rescale? Is it done or PTS only? Or only for a couple of mechs?

If you stayed connected you would know.

Don't mess with me right now. Russ has got me fuming bad enough that I probably shouldn't even be on this forum right now for my own sake.

First no such thing. Second if they did not want it they could disable it. Third as long as the PTB judge posters based upon their number of likes, everyone should be liking their posts.

But do not let that make you; you do what makes you happy!
