actually I wrote it out to make it abundantly clear that the VIII was intentional and clear to my fellow lorenerds that the updated "solaris" we were hypothesizing about would not be Solaris seven but rather eight.

Honestly I think they were right not to rush a Solaris mode, as it will be boring as hell if set up incorrectly. A lot of potential for matches to delay if anyone is trying to hide and wait for the endgame, especially with no teammates to share radar with you. Assuming last man standing gets the lion's share of the C-bills and XP, I'm not sure how you keep the pace fast and furious when there's a strong incentive to hide a bit until enemies weaken each other.

Maybe you do just force smaller maps (fewer places to hide) and a smaller number of players in the match (6-8?).

They could make it a damage done wins all kind of thing to. Or maybe 2 winners per match if that is included. Why not for FFA? I mean half the players win in any mode currently in game. 2 winners is still a lot less.

There will for sure be other modes on Solaris as well, of some kind.

More on topic, who wouldn't drop into an FFA match on Solaris right now if they could. :)

They could always just make the FFA games not give CBills or XP. That way you only do the FFA a bit on the side, but still need to spend time in the normal pub queue to get your mech skills.

Everyone would, essentially, choose their heaviest, most well armored, probably long ranged mech.

There would be almost no reason to choose anything under assault class. If you think light agility will save you from focused fire of of 23 other pilots (or 11, or 5) you have another thing coming. ECM light in a 6/12 person ffa might stand a chance, depending on the map shape.

If they outlawed assaults, it would just be warhammers, marauders, and night gyrs.... and so on down the list.

Eventually you end up with scouting cw mode, but without teams (or intel/dropships) =p

Speaking of which, the mech chose trend in scouting cw is pretty much proof how ffa will turn out.

while i think free for all is great in theory it won't work.

My reasoning behind this is as follows.

1. people form groups naturally as a consequence of interacting with each other.
2. groups lead to teams
3. eventually as teams are formed,the free for all becomes "who's turn is it to win this round"
4. teams make free for all not possible.

Well Solaris would have weight specific matches. Lights vrs lights, assaults vrs assaults, etc.

That's a feature that could only be made for past MechWarrior titles. That technology was lost forever. Another technology that has been lost forever is a game lobby and being able to host your own games with options for free.
