This issue was exacerbated by the current mastery system which required 3 variants. So, people wanted/needed lots of variants so that each variant was capable of playing a different style rather than having a mech specialize in a certain role.
Thus, by having 5 variants of a mech capable of filling all the different builds dakka/laser vomit/gauss vomit/SRM brawler/LRM/etc. you sort of make creating more mechs redundant.
I don't blame people for wanting variants of each chassis capable of doing a variety of builds/roles because who wants to level the same mech 3 times.
So to summarize, I think with the new skill system I'd like to see mechs with less numbers of variants in the future with more specialized roles.
However to acheive this I think players who own multiple variants of a mech need to be compensated by the new skill system for owning 3+ variants of a given chassis.
One of the best options I saw was giving a "skill point" reduction in cost for each variant owned or you could go the other route and give an XP bonus based on the number of variants you own.
For example at 3 variants you get a 30% XP bonus, and then 40% at 4 and finally 50% at 5.
Or you could simply give a 1 time huge pile of XP bonus based on the number of duplicated variants you own.
This would allow us "whales" with 130+ mechs to choose a specialization for the 1 or 2 variants we prefer of each chassis to then make that particular chassis "special" for ourselves in our garage to fill a certain role.

They perhaps want to pull people from MWO to work on MW5. That is chief among my thoughts regarding this poll.

The only reason I can think of is that they are totally re-thinking their monetizing strategy. That makes me nervous.

They still have to pay the bills and the payroll. How do you do that without your primary source of continuing income?

I would say, slowing down on mech releases would be perfect (one every 2-3 months).
Take that time to tend to other aspects of the game.
Haven't they repeatedly stated that the team that takes care of news mechs is completely separate from the people who take care of other aspects of the game?
I think we need more mechs for two reasons:
1. They have stated that this is how they are getting funding for the game. Even with the problems and slow improvements, I'd very much like to keep this game alive.
2. Options are great, even if there is a lot of overlap. People have tons of favorites they would love to see interpreted and implemented by the MWO team and I think it's great they they are providing us new options monthly without it interfering with their other game improvements.

Well, the modeler and the texture artist can do a whole lot of other things if they weren't to meet the deadline at the end of each month!

Or it could be that now the 3 variant thing is going out the window he wants to sell you 3 diff mechs a month for $20 each, because some people wont be happy about buying 3 variants 2 of which they will never use/master and threfor lose sales.
Wonder what a poll would look like if he put it on the forum and asks..
Do you want more Mechs..yes/no.
OR
Do you want more content (Maps etc)..yes/no.

Of course, since my love has always been and always will be the 3025 era, and there are no circumstances in which I'd want to acquire a clan mech, I think this prospect is AWESOME.

Pros
Easy way to keep people interested in MWO and talking about it. I'll be totally honest, I've been busy lately, and if it weren't for mech announcements I probably wouldn't be talking to my other friends about MWO at all if it weren't for the Mech announcements.
Since there is some overlap, people are more likely to pick a mech that they like, rather than pick a mech because it's the only one that can do what they want to do. Rather than falling into the trap of being the most efficient mech out there.
There's still some mechs that people like out there. Even if there's mechs that people don't like, they can have a chance to shine and be loved in MWO whereas they'd be forgetten if it wasn't in MWO. I grew up on Mechwarrior 2 and played a bit of Mechwarrior 4 so most of my favorites are in. However, it's always nice to see something "new" and see more of battletech's past re-imagined. Helps that Alex is friggin amazing at his job. With that said I'd be fine with more PGI mechs as long as it's rare enough to keep it special.
If new mechs in MWO can just be swapped over to MW5 and later products with ease, then even more reason to get more mechs since it'd be a good investment.
Cons:
Meta chasers already have meta mechs, so they aren't looking for more mechs, unless you increase the power creep even more. So they probably aren't going to care about any new mechs. As much as I dislike people being disloyal to the mechs they love, they are a decent chunk of the game's population and that's just how some people play games.
The more mechs there are, the harder it is for people to remember individual mechs. Not a problem for older fans, since that's why this game even exists, but newer people might have a hard time with the mechs. Not everyone started with the original battletech stuff.
So in general I'd like to see more mechs.

Loaded question for sure. Lots that is not said here. Is this a choice between more mechs and nothing, more mechs or more features, more mechs or faster MW5 delivery?
There is a lot of mech bloat in certain weight classes, while others starve. Lots of bland loadouts as well that could be addressed and made awesome with the new skill tree. Variant bloat doesn't bother me, not much work goes into that from a programming/modeling side.
