Having been on and off the game for some time, and considering getting back in the game, I was just wondering what everybody thinks the current state of MWO community is. Has there been a rise or decline in player base in the past while?

I would say that in terms of player base, you are well above the size of Armored Warfare, Dreadnought and Fractured Space but well below that of EVE Online and War Thunder.

While far away from the most rude of player bases (give that to World of Tanks and League of Legends), I would say the community here in general are the most existential I have ever seen.

Then multiply by 2 or so, since there are a lot of players that do not use Steam to login.

Existential. Nice. Code for self-absorbed or that the only way to make this game what it could potentially be is through application of the self? Perhaps both.

Player base is not big but it hasn't been declining much. Stable, currently.

Honestly this community is the best part of this game (and I include the a55hts in that statement). Over and above that however, from an actual game play perspective now (or maybe in a week) is a good time to return. CW is getting a fairly extensive addition in the form of a sequence of quick play maps and modes being added to the existing invasion modes; so at least CW will likely experience a bit of a population spike at least for the short term. QP is as it has always been, but hereto we are getting a new mode in the form of "escort mode" (look t up if you want details). So yeah, if ever there was a time where the community might increase due to the "merits" of the game and its development, now is probably that time.

MWO has an older base of players. With it the ability to be sadistic and troll at a higher level.

But also better guilds/clans and all that good community stuff.

Also if that day someone pissed off then super rage activate Posted Image that no kid can pull off.

Player base seems to have stagnated a bit. Quality of the player base, personality wise, is generally good, but there remains a few vocal asswagons that for some reason play games they hate. Tactical proficiency wise, I swear, some of these guys couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag.

Player morale, OTOH, seems improved by the MechCon announcements. Especially (possibly exclusively) by MW5.

Or PGI could put the player counter back in so we could have an accurate count

We're a bunch of a-holes playing stompy robbits and hating every one else for not doing the way we think they should.

So, still a better love story than Twilight, sexier than 50 Shades of Grey (look at dat Roughneck. DEM CURVES) and still more functional than the US congress.

While the game may have an adequately sized playerbase, many of us are tentatively optimistic for next year's proposed changes and whether or not PGI can successfully and intelligent implement their promises.

I'd give most rudest community to Elite: Dangerous. Their official forum is a massive "safe space" for PvE carebears, PvPers not welcomed.

Apparently you've never played EVE. That place is just the worst. Even the "friendly" people you meet wouldn't blink at shiving you the first chance they get if they would profit from it. And the not-so-friendly people do much, much worse, all while being total ***holes about it.

Judging by how matchmaker is now mixing Tier 1 with Tier 4 players on the reg, it seems like the playerbase has shrunk significantly. On the other hand, I haven't seen any numbers to confirm this.

The MWO playerbase is relatively harmless compared to other "communities" on the internet. Sometimes you encounter some really childish and aggressive behaviour from what you assume to be an angry teenager, and then it turns out to be a guy in his 50's with a wife, a dog and three kids, which is always a bit weird. But for the most part, it's a relatively nice community. Some people even give away free stuff to people on the internet or volunteer money to support tournaments and stuff.

The playerbase is shrinking and will continue. You may get spikes here and there but the trend is the trend.

I don't think all of that comes from PGI as the base has much to do with chasing new players off and this forum is an example of that. Its populated by squareheads and moderated by the same. As in life most often the majority is wrong as it is here.
For example the majority in the US believe our founding documents were written fought over and approved by the majority where its no where near the truth. Far from it. At the time of the founding roughly 3% were actively bearing arms against the king and by the time the conflict was over more colonists wore redcoats than blue. The sqaureheads than convinced themselves that they were a part of it and the big lie continued. Pretty much like that in anything and in any art. Science is a good example too. Most every major discovery was by outliers or those outside the box.

Now if you come back to the forums you can see that in practice. Only the party line carries here. All other opinion is quickly shot down castigated and dropped. Then the sqaureheads pat themselves on the back and continue to arrange the deck chairs on this titanic. Reality will come at the end but they will just move on and corrupt some other game.

Only thing that can change that is a leader with vision. Sorry but I don't see Russ filling that role. He is a squareheaded as the population is as examples abound.

Oh i've heard of EvE. You haven't seen E:D till you see legions of "carebears" gloating that they abruptly leave the game when a player engages them in Open play and PvPers are treated like greifers no matter what.. Heck the mods there are even actively assisting the "safe space"

PvPers are more likely to be jaded but that's from the community and not the game.

I've got $800 set aside that will be spent on this game if the CW addition makes the mode viable and fun.

Community has a definite split between old and bitter and new and entitled. Be nice if the Community Manager could do something to bring these two groups together.
