Bryan Ekman confirms that MW5 is being developed with HOTAS support in mind.

I'm guessing hotas is something to do with joysticks and/or vr support. Now if they could redo and sell us a steel battalion joystick,throttle and pedals clone set up I'd buy that in a hurry. Or get razor to develop and mass produce their fancy concept mwo joystick with that monitor attached.

HOTAS stands for Hands On Throttle-And-Stick.

I'll give you 3 chances to guess what it's about.

On topic, i do think it's great news.
Wish MW:O was built more around that and not Mouse+Keyboard master race.
(I mean, i like playing with mouse and keyboard, but i do think that joysticks should be at least a VIABLE option, which they are not)

Yeah joysticks in mwo have no support just lots of complex work arounds. Honestly I'm liking the key and mouse controls of mwo. Having a choice between the two would be great. The past few games I've had to use joystick to play the game or quit were the lucasarts' x-wing and tie fighter games and having to remember to use most of the keyboard such as constantly switching power from cannons to shields.

It just sucks now for mwo because as much as i want it to carry on I feel that any money spent here would be a waste and go to mw5 despite russ saying they were two separate development teams now. I'd hope eventually mwo would get the wasp/stinger lams with the option of joy or key and mouse but it looks like I'll just have to play past titles and keep emulating the older 98se-xp machines for combat flight sims.

That's cool. Still haven't decided whether to get HOTAS for Star Citizen, but now I have another game that will be compatible. The question is: how fun is it really to play MW games with joysticks?

I got the MW4 series and a Saitek X52 HOTAS for Christmas about 10 years back. It was flipping amazing. You had pretty fine control on your throttle so you could go full speed to charge the enemy mechs, and then quickly slow down if you needed to make a sharp turn and/or duck between a couple buildings if you needed to. IDK..always felt the level of precision, at least in older games, between Jstick and mouse was greatly exaggerated. Maybe it mattered at the top end of the comp spectrum, but even PvP, never had any issue laying my Gauss and PPCs exactly where I wanted, while jumping all over the place, in MW4.

MWO and newer games do indeed seem to have a more pronounced gap.

Mouse is way more accurate, but the "feel" of joystick is just too good, I mean look at most flight sims these days, Hands on Throttle and Mouse is as, if not more popular, because of the precision in aiming.

I played all the previous MechWarrior titles using Joystick. I am super psyched to see it is coming back for MW5

Eh.. I already use Xpadder and joystick with my left hand and gaming mouse with my right. (I have everything fit onto the pad with page switches except for the arrow keys and CTRL to flip around weapon groups.. targeting which I have as mouse wheel up.. heat vision which is mouse wheel down and full zoom toggle which I have set to the trigger just to the right of my LMB.)

All HOTAS support really means is autoaim. That's why we can't have real HOTAS support in MWO.. people would plug in or emulate a joystick and then have autoaim with their mouse.

I never played MW4 online. So I have no frame of reference.

I heard they were planning on use mouse and Keyboard on the F-35, but the darn thing kept getting lost in the cockpit every time the pilot did a barrel roll.

Yes, there's a legit reason for joysticks on real-world applications. Its how I operated the 50 cal on Stryker convoys in Mosul, but honest to god the f-35 falls apart if you fart in its direction, that is, when its not pumping exhaust into the air system to kill the pilot.

when properly sighted, reasonably so... I mean, how accurate is any mounted weapon, recoil, movement and all that make really solid hits rare, but, you really only need one or two so volume of fire makes up for the rest. So, mostly accurate if you don't work the joystick like like its a lonely saturday night at home. A better aiming method wouldn't have helped though, you get bounced around too much for fine motor skills to be a factor.

I donno. I actually didn't like the Artemis concept, much. Yay, it had a screen. Otherwise, it looked rather uninspired.

I mean... it isn't a bad looking device, but it takes up a lot of space, and the throttle component looks kinda iffy.

By comparison, here's an X52 (which I have collecting dust...):

Not a perfect device, though. The X52 requires the throttle be plugged in if you only want the joystick. You cannot only input the stick, as the PC hooks into the throttle module only.
