Supposedly. But that only works if he has under 200 CT IS.

Also had this occur to my Timberwolf while playing in quick play once that I noticed so its repeatable.

Ammo explosions go through structure directly, and IIRC, also don't get reduced damage
That plume is exclusive to ammo explosions
Been that way for years

Then how can my Timberwolf with no ammo onboard, no Gauss Rifle, and has CASE built in have ammo explosion when its only equipment is Lasers. 2 LPL, 6 ER M Laser was the build. Filled out the rest with Double Heat Sinks.

The all attackers dead and they get victory is a glitch I believe. Probably due to an internal timer issue relating to the VIP getting to the drop zone. I had a match where we were defending and five minutes in with both sides engaged in two different parts of the map and my screen showing no damage to the VIP mech things suddenly ended in an attacker win with a "failed to reach Drop Zone in time" message. I have read that a legged VIP that cannot get to the drop zone before the timer will end grants a win to the attackers. So something related to that must occasionally get triggered by glitch if true.

The attackers don't HAVE to kill the VIP mech to win... they merely have to prevent it from getting to the drop ship on time. Lots of ways that can happen.
That's why it frustrates me to see attackers trying to hit anything but the VIP's legs. Take one of those out, and it's a nearly-guaranteed attacker victory.

I think you're misinterpreting what "ammo explosion" means--it sounds like you are thinking of "explosive rounds," which would then be dependent on your 'mech running an ammo-based weapon (***EDIT: And are not in the game).
An ammo explosion is when a shot to a component causes a critical hit that destroys ammo in that component. Ammo has some % chance (10?) to explode when it is critted, causing X amount of damage. If X damage is more than the HP of the component, then it damages adjacent components.
The damage to adjacent components goes directly to the component, ignoring armor.
So if the LT has ammo and 1 HP, and you destroy that ammo, causing say 25 damage (my numbers are all wrong), then 24 damage goes into the CT--bypassing armor--and if the CT only has 24 or less HP, then it is destroyed, even if the CT has full armor!!!
Usually the CT will flash red for a moment or two as it takes the damage, then be destroyed. Which sounds exactly like what you said earlier:

So, you just overheated?
What you describe seeing, is without a doubt, an ammo explosion
If you went from CT armoured fresh to CT dead in a Laserboat, you overheated.

Yet the Timberwolf I was running had no ammo, only energy weapons. 2 the Target Atlas still had its CT armor.
Still had it on both sides of the CT? Front and back?

Yea, sounds to me like someone overheated!

and OP what you described is exactly what happens when a you get a lucky crit and you blow internals out before the armor. Its fun when it happens to enemies and sad when it happens to you.

Now I have seen that happen. On Alpine Escort the VIP suddenly just stopped walking and got stuck on a pebble, had to give him a bump to get him moving again. This is likely what could have happened.
