So, I'm wanting to pick up a new IS heavy and I'm thinking about getting a Rifleman 3N. Wondering if it's worth picking up. Also, wondering if this build: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...eecf3fd214d1e3f is decent at all.

For UACs, I prefer the 3C, but RFL-3N is my current build for AC5s on the 3N, I also tend to do AC20 sometimes. There's a Gauss rifle build on Gman's website metamechs.

I love my riflemen, but they're very fragile. they're also on the lighter side, most of the builds you could do on the riflemen you could do on a jagermech, and the jagermech can do 3x UAC way better than the rifleman can. The 5D does laser vomit better though. The AC20 one is probably my favorite...followed closely by Misery Lite

I'd suggest a Warhammer 3R instead. You can put those AC10 in a more reliable chassis, with more armor.

Above has arm-shield, though torso-restricted. Also has more ammo, more armor, and faster.

RFL-3N isn't that bad. It's easily the best rifleman .

Superb Ballistic DPS. Especially with AC5s. Folds like wet toilet paper if you get shot tho

If you single it out, without looking for other mechs of the heavy weight class the Rifleman is a realy fun mech.

When It came out I hated it when I was leveling this guy but once you got the basics it is realy ok and with the elite skills quite fun.

The basic problem of all Rifleman chassis is it got the frontal area of most or more than most heavies combined with the armor of a 60T mech.

His high armmounts and decent torso mounts help to alleviate the problem but make you highly dependable on the right terrain as well a keeping within a narrow range bracket.

The 3N did best for me with dual AC10 and some med lasers, the 3C with 3 UAC5 and the 5D with PPCs and some lasers or just lasers.

My favorite one is the 5D, nice mounts and huge arms for blocking the torso.

I think they're fun for the most part, but if you're stuck up close you're generally toast.
I run 4x AC2 on the 3C (affectionately dubbed the Roflman), 2x AC5 on the 3N (those cooldown quirks are amazing) and 2x LB-10X on the Legend Killer (see above note regarding cooldown quirks). How they fare in T3 I'm not too sure, I haven't taken them out for a long time and I think all three of these builds would suffer in the current meta (which I don't really care about tbh)

I would really recommend to forget about the Roflman and get some Warhammers.

I can really recomend the Rifleman as a nimble and hard hitting Ballistic/Support Mech.
As written by other Warriors before it is quite fragile though, and does not fare well in CloseQuarterBattle.

Post Scriptum: I got an 3C Build up with dual AC20, risky but really fun. Blows up when you look to long at it, but man it packs a Punch

I love my Riflemen. I don't really do minmaxing and I consider asymmetrical RFLs to be foul heresy, so my builds are nowhere near optimized... but I generally pull my weight. They're among the most true-to-intent 'Mechs in the game; play them as second-line direct fire support as per lore, and you'll generally get good results with them... lead the push, and you'll get squashed. It's far from the best heavy chassis, but it still has all the things you need to make a good chassis in this game- decent geometry (the arms actually shield very well so the 'Mech can roll damage despite a protruding CT), loads of high ballistic and energy hardpoints, and a reasonable engine cap. So long as you don't try to facetank any Kodiaks, you should be just fine.

Metamechs lists my favorite Rifleman last, but I like the standard engine 3C configuration with dual UAC5 and 4x mediums. Tank with the left side when you need to, and it has more survivability than the other Riflemen.

5D energy boat is shockingly versatile, you can do it with peeps or larges or whatever and it's pretty solid. Seems very nimble with the quirks.

I really enjoy the riflemen. They are just a lot of fun. I wouldn't say that they would be the best choice for competitive play like FW or well competitive play, but you can be successful in them in the public queue. If you like the Jagermechs then you would enjoy riflemen. If you are looking for something that would be effective in group or faction play get a warhammer.

I picked it up. I already have the Warhammers, so I didn't see why not. The build in my OP works pretty well I'm finding. Slow, but usually doing around 500 damage on a decent game.

The 3C with 2xLBX10 and 4 medium lasers is a messy, messy mech. Does lose some pinpoint power but will put out the numbers, and when enemy mechs are cored they will -hurt-.

My second favorite is the laser vom one, Gman's build is very nice.

I need to figure out something with the 5N, I'm not really digging the double AC10s and MLAS. Maybe because the WHM 3R does that better.

You should try this build on the 3N; its quirks are, IMO, far better than the 3C.

And, yeah, it does put out the numbers:

I had actually considered tossing the same into the 3N and just rolling them both in my CW deck. :)

Btw. one can lower the arm armor alot, squeezing out some extra tonnage.
All my Riflemen are at 24hp per arm.

Taking off arm armor sacrifices the only source of longevity the 'Mech has. The arms are huge; they cover nearly the whole torso viewed side-on. I don't think I've died more than a handful of times without losing at least one arm first, and I run all XL builds. No, people don't generally shoot for the arms... but if they're shooting your RT and you twist just 30 degrees or so left, they hit the RA with most of that damage instead. Even the CT is pretty well protected from around 45 degrees twist on (apart from the antenna)- those arms are lifesavers. IMO the tonnage is too valuable where it is. None of the other 60-tonners can boast that kind of arm coverage; why not take advantage of that since the chassis is so squishy otherwise?

But that's where I put all my guns! D:

Edit: If I take armor off of anywhere, it's the legs. Riflemen has good enough weapon mounts that it can hide it's legs most of the time, and the mech is fragile enough anyways that most people are just gonna try to XL check you, so they'll never gun for your legs.

I'm enjoying the Rifleman. I really liked the MAD, but don't like the Warhammer, even though I usually get decent numbers in it. The Rifleman just suits me and is fun. My faves are the 3xLPL build and the AC40 build.

Actually, I REALLY love the AC40 RFL-3N. A bit of feast or famine, but once it get's into range it can totally wreck face Posted Image
