I have no idea why it's like this. It's the Christmas holidays, the number of people playing MWO is probably a lot higher than usual. Yet the quality of matchmaking is going straight into the crapper.

Anecdotal evidence in the spoiler below, but anyone who has been playing in the solo queue these past few days or keeping an eye on the forum know what I'm talking about already.

Just got out of a match with my just-for-fun gauss rifle Shadowcat. Even with only 25 rounds of ammunition, I got the top score. I wasn't even playing very well, I was almost standing still in open terrain, just shooting at people who were new to the game and didn't know how to control their mech.

Anyone who has played with me or have checked my stats know that I'm not a particularly good player, even for Tier 2.

I know it's an established fact that a lot of "weekend warriors" arep laying during holidays and such, but that doesn't explain why MM has just given up.

Spoiler

Yep, carry harder. Bring your best guns or you hurt the team, no more silly fun in vindicators or urbanmechs if you want to have decent matches. It's all about the kodiak carry, timber wolf stomp, atlas faceroll, nova meltdown, or cheetah rampage. :)

I drink and drive a lot during the holidays. Amusingly, my performance doesn't really degrade much.

MM has been turned off.

Holidaze turned on.

Expect epic potatoes, anticipate that your lancemate will do the dumbest thing possible at the worst time, including the full alpha to your rear (uh, sorry, I was shooting with zoom?). Prepare for dumb moves on a level unseen since the groms were last out. Treat them nice, some are capable of learning... if we can get the trainable ones to stick around, we can grow the player base and have new targets to shoot at.

Yup, school is on vacation and the long weekend is upon us.

Look at the bright side, wait times should be short.

Since I see no T1 players, it appears MM is working correctly in that instance. Only T1 that T4-5s are supposed to be shielded from,

Though I did have a guy a week or 2 ago say he just bought his first mech and looking at his profile I could believe he was in fact T4 like he claimed. So it is probably fubar like you claim, but not because of the evidence you presented, as that is not contrary to how the MM and PSR was supposed to work.

I assumed many children playing on their parents accounts.
I assumed people lied about being tier 5, because Russ himself said tier 2 would never face tier 5. Russ wouldn't lie to us no would he?
Potato level in tier 2 has been high since the Dec 10-11 weekend.

Yeah, I started a humble brag thread to show what I can do against Tier 5 players. You've seen through my deception.

I don't know. In T1 you get pretty even fights with a lot of strategy and...oh my gosh, what I am saying. My T1 matches look currently like this (granted, this one was extreme but it is not uncommon lately that 2-4 mechs do not break the 100 dmg mark) - your teammates die so fast that you are suddely drowned in a red flood:

I took a screenshot when I was near a teammates cockpit. Well, kinda explains it

Am I hurting the team if I bring an AC/2 Direwolf? I want to know if my fun comes at the expense of others'... Because I love taking away other peoples' fun! Muwahahaha

I don't think they were all joking. I know for a fact that T1's are facing T4's, which wasn't supposed to happen either, since I've been watching my roommate play on his account, and I've seen him up against EmP players and such in solo QP, and not during late night hours either.

One of Russ' town halls/ podcast. Don't know which one.

Tier system is tier +/- 2 tiers

Tier 1 faces tiers 1-3
Tier 2 faces tiers 1-4
Tier 3 faces all tiers
Tier 4 faces 5-2
Tier 5 faces 5-3

As long as you position for the role it works, and I have no doubt that you are one of those players that can :)

but there is a loophole in that argument. tier 3 faces tier 1 and tier 5 at the same time!

It is misguided to think that matchmaking can ever make a serious difference in a game with the population of MWO. People complain about MM in much more populated games. It is not a problem simply fixed by management. There's just no way to make a skyscraper when all you have is straw.

Matchmaker in group play is pretty garbage. I'm tier one and I play with friends who play casually (tier 3-4) yet I seem to drag them into tier 1 games against bloody EMP.

I know which one you refer to. In that, nor anywhere else, was it stated that Tier system was always to be set to +/- 2 tiers, only currently and that he can dial it up or down. AFAIK he nor any dev has ever said that T2s can never play against any other tier.

However, in the PSR command chair T1s were explictily stated to never play T4/5s. But other than that the PSR system was never stated to shield any specific tier from any other.
