I don't think PGI should allow for special characters (~!@#$%^&*...), digits or alt-codes in pilot names.

It's harder to read, hard to type, search, and will be hard to use with in-game commands (if such thing will exist) such as mute, invite or ignore.

I think it should be limited to alpha characters and any character that can normally be part of a person's name (dashes, apostrophe, space).

(edit) I could live with it if at the minimum, only printable ascii characters were allowed (codes 32-127).

Boo to that.

I've been using }{avoc as my callsign since I started playing MW series games in '96 or whatnot, except for the MMORPGs and MPBT:3025 (which pissed me off too) I've been able to use the } and { to make }{.

I do agree that sometimes it can be irritating to try and send a tell to 3L1t3M@N or something like that, but I still don't think that eliminating special characters will solve that.

People who want to make up stupid irritating names will still manage by using capital i's for Ls and all kinds of stupidity.

The people with ™ in their names make me laugh. I'm sure there will be another way to reach people, probably by their user ID (mine is 405, for example).

being in NA (North America) I don't have a major issue with standard chars and even shift based special chars, the thing that ticks me off are the special chars like the spanish special and things that can only be entered if you know the ascii hex codes to bring them up.

not this is not intended as a complaint about those chars just a preference that if there is more than one server (per region) for example "restricted or banned chars" should be whatever is NOT on the standard keyboard

I probably should have phrased it differently then. What I mean is that it should at least be printable ascii characters only (codes 32-127), and not extended ascii (alt-codes). To a minimum... I could live with that. Anything above code 127 or below 32 fall in the non-printable or extended ascii range and those are the codes that are hard to type when you don't know them, as they don't appear on their own key on the keyboard (depending on the keyboard's language)

Here's a link that shows the different classes (if you may call them that) of ascii characters: http://www.ascii-code.com/

Already implemented. Special characters will be stripped at some point in the future.

Are we talking special characters like Tweaks mentioned? (Alt-codes) or any character that is not alpha-numeric?

omg If searching for something that has alt codes in it it's not hard...just don't put in the alt codes:

if you want to find posts by †KHETTI†™ just search for KHETTI and it will bring his posts up, such as the other thread on this topic!

And as far as sending a message to someone in game even, I'm sure a game as detailed as this will be, you'll be able to search, Click on the name, or use that top secret computer trick called cut and paste! That's how I put †KHETTI†™ there in the first place with the alt codes in his name.

I hope you decide to leave it alone and leave it implemented, wouldn't it be alot easier to give pilots a checkbox option whether or not to be able to view the chars or not? The checkbox could change the alt codes to a * or something.

It never fails, it's just like anywhere else real world or not. A few people that don't like something **** and moan about it, then someone decides to change it just to make the few happy and revoke something that could otherwise be a nice option for gamers.

The fix is real easy and cheap....leave it implemented...leave the code alone....if you don't like alt codes don't use'em!!

Hopefully implemented,

And the above example is exactly why we do not allow special characters. :). We've already seen far more offensive and non-readable names attempted.

what about the pilots that have already registered with a ™ or otherwise in their name?

i would agree at least printable ones would be nice.

I guess my point that I was trying to make is that different "regions" may have different sets and subsets of charactors that should be considered acceptable.

IE in north america for instance the dominant charactorset is most likely to be considered english, therefor english chars and POSSIBLY the alternate numerical key functions for example could be considered legit.

in a region where spanish is the dominant language, then the keyboards may have the "spanish" chars could/would be considered acceptable even though in the "english" region they would be banned

heck I suspect the asian region market regions might be very irritated if a server for their region only allowed english chars

Major A, you're lucky. Some forums give out suspensions/bans when people try to avoid the language filter. :)

Which set(s) of characters will be stripped?

That is, will the full set of ASCII printable characters (codes 32-127) be allowed, or only a subset of that - perhaps only the alphanumeric characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9), or even only the alphabetic characters (A-Z, a-z) if one wishes to completely remove "leet" as a possibility?

Also, would exceptions be considered - for example, would tildes, diaereses/umlauts/etc, and other such characters be allowed for reasonably common or semi-common names like the surnames Muñoz, De Épée, or Bäulmer - if even on a case-by-case basis?

I'm not trying to avoid any filters of any sort, I registered my name this way specifically for the forums.
It's different to be reading forums and seeing things than reading an IGN - In Game Name in a Battle Simulation.

An IGN should be able to be whatever you want aside from the top outright blatant curse words. It's obvious those types
that do that, have no creative naming skills or they are 13 and don't know any better and think it's funny.

I'm more concerned to be able to do these *>{<}_ but would very much like the set with ™ and the others, that's why
I was suggesting a checkbox, maybe enable by default to filter out either altcodes and use an In Game User ID instead as
Ghost had mentioned, and word filter. World of Tanks has a word filter enabled by default.

I'd also rather read alt codes than some shmuck come in with the name zzzzzzzzzXXxxxxccv or 1234567890.
those are usually the ones that come in team killing, unless this MMO is going to work similar to Guild Wars
but instead of just towns and villages you have Bases and Planet Systems to visit.
IDK however the gameplay is, at least alt codes show some intelligence to even know what one is, alot of people don't.

When a song on the radio comes on you don't like, you ignore it, turn it off or change the station.
You don't go and burn the radio station down and ruin it for everyone else that might like it.

I just think the options to be able to do this should be there, not taken away!

You ARE sort of doing it in your sig. :)

Not saying "Major A" was trying to avoid the filter. Just bringing up the fact that some forums boot you if you use characters in posts to get around the filter.

Your correct, I'd forgotten to take it off after I made the post I did with my IGN hopeful name in it.
