See if you guys can figure this one out. I talked to the splat cat pilot later and found out. Hint: it wasn't seismic. It was actually a pretty neat lesson for both light pilots and light targets. :)

Most likely thing was he noticed your ECM bubble on him

Your ECM is on disrupt mode, so he knew you are within 100 meters away or so.

That's what I thought at first, but that wasn't the case. I wasn't close enough. :)

Nope, wasn't that either. He had no idea it was there and I was able to use it to elude him during the chase. :P

while playing FP sometimes we would see exactly where the other team was

this was before radar sweep
we just considered it a gift from PGI

just like when you drop you can see some light running around and you can see exactly what he is doing

Hmm, that's good to know. Not what happened this time though. I gave myself away but only very subtly.

I was actually very impressed by Dr. Splatcat's awareness when he told me how he knew.

You're getting warm. He didn't quite hear my mech, but he heard something. ;)

At the start of the video, you locked on to him, but he went out of your LOS for a brief moment. That triggers the radar deprivation indicator. Given his position at the back of the fighting at that point, he must know that there is something nearby sneaking around - a light.

BINGO!!!!

In the next map DrxAbstract, the splatcat pilot, indignantly told me that the radar derp chirp alerted "your intended victim." Posted Image

I'm surprised you did not know that.
Even i know that it's not the best idea to backstab with a lock.
Actually thought the cat heard the sound of you knocking over some trees. Or had seen a shadow (i'd enable shadows since they can give an enemy away easily, likewise they can give you away easily too and if you have them disable you don't even know it).

Yup. Everything is information in this game. Lasers scraping terrain, PPCs hitting or gauss whistling past. Everything tells you something about what's going on.

Which is why I'm pretty annoyed when someone fires lasers pointlessly into terrain or the sky.

Even better: Seismic is radar, right? Nope. Not entirely, at least. It works on mechs that are WALKING.

So if someone is not very observant with their hearing, you can sneak up on someone that has seismic and is standing still by using JJs for the last 60-70m of your attack run (for SPL range), because it won't register on seismic.

I knew it was a possibility, but, out of the literally hundreds of people I've backstabbed with the cheetah so far, Drx was the first confirmed case of being alerted by a lock. Mostly people just aren't that alert.

Now some circumstances were indeed working in his favor, as Fox outlined. Nevertheless, I was impressed.

Which reminds me of this time I was playing my Viper the other day; I was sneaking up to an enemy heavy/assault, intending on backstabbing it, when a friendly light I was with decided to just shoot at the side of the enemy from 300 meters range.

Naturally, the enemy heavy/assault turned around and started shooting at the first enemy he saw (me), preventing me from getting a backstab in that would have allowed me to down the enemy mech easily.

The friendly light was a total idiot for blowing my approach like that. I was so annoyed, that when I saw another enemy heavy/assault approaching, I just GTFOed out of there and left the light to fight alone; he was also too stupid to retreat when outmatched, and died.
