This might end over in feature suggustions but it occurred to me last night that there doesn't need to be such a difference between these two career paths.
At the moment the Mercenaries are the clear winners being able to change to other factions and work their way through the reputation rewards.
However, is it not feasible for Loyalists to be able to do the same thing albiet in a more limited fashion? Surely it's not uncommon for the army of one Faction to assist in the battles with their allies.
So why not allow Loyalist units to be able to earn reputation and c-bills by allowing them to join other allied factions on short term contracts? Sort of a limited version of what the Mercenaries can do.
But what then makes the Loyalists different?
Loyalists are the only ones that can fly the colours of their faction. That is, the little faction symbol we have next to our names and who the unit is associated with. Even when 'contracted' out to another faction, they retain their loyalist markings.
Mercenaries can simply use the mercenary symbol and down the track, hopefully we can get unit logos for everyone as well.
Loyalists could continue to earn loyalty points for their faction, but gain reputation with the faction that they have assisted.
It's like saying: "A unit of the Davion Guard has been dispatched to the Steiner/Marik border to reinforce the Steiner forces in that are and aid in the border conflicts."
Might be nice to have a different term to 'contract'... perhaps one of our military types know the correct term, it's eluding me at the moment.
A couple of subtle changes behind the scenes and this seems fairly easy and reasonable to implement.
Thoughts?

Seems pointless. You already fight alongside your fellow IS/Clan factions now.

It would have been more significant under the old system, sure, but we still need to change factions to get the loyalty/reputation rewards if we want to. There have been plenty of posts about how loyalists haven't received any benefits from the last few FW updates. This seems like a small step that would alleviate some of those issues.

It seems like you're describing FPv2. I liked that one. Taking permanent loyalty netted you bonus loyalty points.. and, most importantly..
..new pilots could take a mechbay tour and earn Rank 2 in each faction before settling down on one flavor of loyalty tree.
I'm very happy that I got my Rank 2 with everyone literally the day before Phase 3 was crapped onto our chests.
