Hi everyone,
I know I'm late to the party, But I've got the Medusa when it was on sale and plan to get the other 2 variants when I'll have enough C-Bills (or when they are on sale Posted Image )
  • The first thing I've noticed is that they are a lot of fun! sure, 8 JJs are overkill but the 'Mech is just a lot of fun.
  • The second thing I've noticed (which is most noticeable on the Medusa) is that it's arms tend to soak a lot of damage (surprisingly, way more than the Mist-Lynx btw) and I almost always lose at least one if not both before the match ends or I die... There was an armor quirks pass not long ago and I think it would have been nice to give those arms a little extra armor. It doesn't feel like a competitive 'Mech at all so a little buff wouldn't be too much to ask. that or move some of the shoulder surface to the ST hit box...
  • Third thing is the set of 8 bonuses, which I realise is personal preference whether it's a good or bad idea - to me it just feel like it turns this omnimech into a battlemech... on the NTG for example, the quirks are not as significant so you can just skip them but on this fragile 'Mech every agility and range quirks helps...
Overall I enjoy riding this 'Mech but it's a little too fragile.. It's speed doesn't make up for it's size as much as smaller 'Mechs and the arms seems to really fall off too easily.

Your thoughts?

Would you rather lose the arms first or the side torso like other clan mediums tend to?

Honestly, the Viper is just a fat light mech, and you need to treat it as such. On the subject of the 8/8 quirks, I really wish they had gone back and given it the Linebacker treatment.

I find myself in many matches running around with no weapons for half a match, trying desperately to draw the attention from my teammates (cuz you know hot PUGs love to munch them zombie mechs)
I don't know... I think with enough torso twisting I can survive with more components for the rest of the match

It's quite fragile, but keep in mind that you can combine omnipods to have 9 (!) energy weapons. 9 SPLs, for example. You'll sacrifice the 8-set quirks, but you'll have enough weapons that even losing both arms or one ST still leaves you with 5 SPLs.

(5SPL + 2SRM4 is also fun. And if you have the Medusa, you can run 6 or 7 SPL in addition to 2SRM4.)

The Viper is pretty fragile though. But very fast and mobile. So it's all about being a bully, ganging up on targets and not going 1v1 if you can avoid it.

I had a Viper, but it never clicked with me. I sold it and purchased a Shadow Cat instead.

I think I just prefer the Cicada for that sort of close in playstyle.

Viper is the best to me, have the best k/d out of all my mechs (almost 2.5:1) and I just love it.

Yeah, all Medusa's hardpoints in arms sucks, but otherwise it'd be stupidly overpowered. Its quirks (especially 60% to acceleration and deceleration) make it very mobile. I mean, really mobile. Add to it its jumping, which is the best in the game, and way more firepower, than any light, and you get a superb mech.

You just have to pilot it like a light, not like a medium. Be cautious, and you lose your arms pretty rarely. I use 6 CSPL build, because I love to shoot with full alphas, and can spill 4-5 full alphas before overheating.
