LRMs will always be either too bad or too good.
Making them dumb fire high damage artillery would be ridiculous in all honesty, but at least that would require more skill to use effectively than lock on and hurp derp.

Yep "hurp derp"...
If you are some twit sitting way in the back spamming LRMs at targets over 700m out with never ever attaining a LOS lock yourself you are more than likely only landing 30% or less of your damage potential on target.
This is "hurp derp" and let's be honest if you get killed by this guy you were hurpin the derp so much harder you deserved it.
A real combatant using LRMs is fluid mobile and aggressive. They are seeking the best angle of attack while constantly on the move keeping pace with the mechs they are supporting.
A good Lurmer knows the locks you count on are the ones you TAG yourself. The SKILLED lurmer knows how to push the limits on the min. range of LRMs how to optimize the cover available to compensate for using a handicapped weapon against direct fire opposition and always leverages the few advantages the LRMs have against those targets.
If this pilot kills you you got out played and there is no shame in this. make no mistake this pilot has skills. They need to to over come ECM,Radar Dep. AMS slowest projectile speeds longest min. range and lack of damage focusing.
