Just whatever you do, don't try to run cERLLas as your main weaponry. Those things are terrible if the enemy can torso twist at all.

True, erLL have too long of a burn time so for you to get decent damage you have to stare at them for a while. LPL's mixed with erML have the same burn time so you can shoot them together. just watch the heat

First things first, set your mouse sensitivity properly. Assuming you have a gaming mouse, set it to 800 dpi, and set in game to 0.2. Congrats, you can now hit things with lasers (full burn, not just some random sweep) Next, you mentioned buying DHS, and sometimes not needing them, that is false. 99% of builds out there require DHS, it is pretty much a 1.5million upgrade tax on IS mechs. Next, IS XL engines require you to be a better pilot and learn spread damage over your mech, but in the current meta, is pretty much required for you to mount similar firepower to clan mechs without moving like a slug. Lastly, Heavies are the bread and butter in this game. Heavy mechs sit at the perfect place of tankiness/movement speed/damage (especially Clan heavies)

All good points. In fact I would go one step further in regards to XL engines.

Do not buy an I.S. mech as your first mech get a clan mech.

If you want a light mech get the Arctic Cheetah

A Medium...well lots of options Stormcrows are excellent so are the Hunchback IIc variants. I would also recommend the Huntsman for a player who intends to eventually pilot I.S. mediums because it has similar performance envelopes unlike the Stormcrow. If you learn on a stormcrow you will only be frustrated by I.S. mediums.

Heavy mechs...Probably would say Ebon Jaguar on this. It has slightly better build versitility over the Timberwolf. Not saying a Timber isn't also an excellent choice. If you want to be more oriented towards eventually being an I.S. exclusive pilot then an Orion IIc has the closest performance qualities to an I.S. mech.

Assault mechs...For the purpose of training for I.S. mech use later I would say stick to Highlander IIc or Marauder IIc.

Essentially use the clan XL as training wheels for the I.S. XL engine. If you screw up with the clan engine at least you still get some practice time in before you lose the other torso...
