Problem:
I've been playing MWO for about 2 years now, when I first started and did the tutorial, and we didn't have the new tutorial yet. I instantly turned on Throttle Decay as that was what I was used to. As I expanded and moved onto other Mechwarrior Titles, I noticed that they either had the option hidden, or not even there. So to better adapt I forced myself across all games to play without Throttle Decay. So when you're in an Assault or something heavy, it's perfectly fine... The problem is the acceleration of the bar is slower than the acceleration of the faster mechs, like the Cicada, Locust, and Spider. I consistently noticed how sluggish the mechs felt, to the point were I had to switch back to throttle decay for MWO. I think that the developers' should to fix is problem, if anything, just for consistensy between their own mechs.

Solution:
I'm sure their are many different solutions to this problem, but the simplist that I can think of would be to just increase the speed bar when throttle decay is off (The Green Highlight).

Your best option is setting whatever your normal "speed up" key to actually be toggling your speed to 100%, and your "slow down" key to toggling to 0%.

There is a key binding for 100% throttle (I think it's a numpad number by default), just as there is one for 0% (I have that bound to X). You might consider doing something like:

2 - Full Throttle
W - Accelerate
S - Decelerate
X - Stop

It gives you a nice clean progression of commands, all easily reached by your throttle finger in a typical WASD hand placement.

Personally I leave it on because I keep fumbling over Stop and Full Reverse when popping in and out of cover. Maybe if they allow macroing of pressing S twice to reverse and just once for full stop then I'd be glad to turn it off.

Second the suggestion for additional throttle commands. I have a rather messy set-up which uses the standard MWO set-up on WASD, with 100% on E, Invert Throttle on Q, and dead stop on X. It is a lot of buttons and it took some getting used to, but it lets me take full advantage of the 'Mech's acceleration capabilities in both directions while still being able to utilize incremental speed to match teammates or otherwise adjust mid-fight.

You don't need to mirror my button usage, a'course. I use weird third-party peripherals that means I remap the hizzell out of any game I play anyways, but the concept is still quite useful. Also far easier on the fingers than throttle decay.

Use W for 100% throttle like the guy said, it improves acceleration. Turn off throttle decay.

Lock arms and have toggle ready if needed. I played with unlocked arms for over a year, locked is better.

If you play lights, Throttle decay is very important....

If you dont then meh.

I play all mechs with throttle decay though because its really necessary when in fast moving chassis and thats typically what i play.

I have never seen a difference in Accel and decel weather you use throttle decay or not, the only things that changes this numbers is quirks as far as i know.

It's amazing to me that people think speed alone will save them in a light.

The secret is abusing the hell out of how broken the accel and deceleration quirks are-- it's easy to lead a target going full speed constantly but good luck hitting a light that is going 160 one second, 40 the next, then 120 by the time you've adjusted the shot. Posted Image

yea, exactly. When some one has a bead on me i just feather that W key and watch them miss.

i find the quickest acceleration possible by using W with 100% throttle, Q bound to reverse and S to slow down (when needed) X full stop (sometimes i use it). no throttle decay. this way, when engaging, you just go full throttle and full reverse when needed. S to slow down a bit when forming ranks.

Why not both?

If you're in a light mech, often you'll be in situations where you need both types. Descending down hills without taking fall damage is possible if you move slowly enough, but you want on-demand acceleration as well when you need to dance with a fatmech.

I have mine on Throttle Decay on, and speed up on Mouse Wheel Up, and speed down on Mouse Wheel down. This way, when I use the mouse wheel to accelerate or decelerate, it behaves as though Throttle Decay is off (it doesn't snap back down to 0 kph) and it holds a constant speed; the moment that I tap on W or S to go forward or back, Throttle Decay snaps back on. It's the best of both worlds; cruise control when you need it, and the ability to hit epic acceleration on demand.

Sadly binding w to 100% throttle doesn't really work for me because it registers key press just when you press it and not constantly. Meaning that if I press a button to stop my mech with w pressed down and release brakes after a second, my mech will just stupidly stand in place getting shot till I realise that I need to release w and push it again to move. For me it's so unintuitive that I rather suffer with throttle decay.

Whatever set-up you use, you'll need to spend some crappy games getting accustomed to. The extra precision and acceleration potential is well worth it, however.

I use the set speed settings. I don't want to hold down the acceleration key to maintain my speed and moving at less than full speed for any distance is annoying when you have to keep feathering the throttle.

i just use a throttle. this makes the throttle decay setting irrelevant.

I used to not use throttle decay, but I realized that it was pretty stupid not to run it in something like a Shadow Cat with MASC or a Locust or other light and I've had it on ever since.

This! This is showing that even in a Clan heavy, which I don't believe has any Accel/Decel Quirks, You can see that the bar for No Throttle Decay is slower than the Acceleration of the heavy, causing a slower Acceleration. I've read all of your replies and I thank you guys(and gals) for the speedy responses along with your own tips! I think I will try with the W set to 100% and S set to reverse. I may tweak it a bit. Thanks Again!

I am stepping my Throttle using "W" and "S" . Do not know whether it is the optimal Method . I guess I am going to do some experimenting after seeing the decay Vids .
