Would 2018 Be Too Early For Mw5?

I think 2019 should be the mininum year which would give them around 3 years of development time, unless they are planning multiple DLCs to expand the game to its full potential.

And since PGI have more time before the game's release, it may give them more incentive to develop MWO, like bringing new tech perhaps. I know that it's said there are two separate teams developing the games, but still.

What do you think?

On the other hand they have already announced it for 2018: postponing that right now would really hurt them more than it would help them.

It could be but people may understand if they announce it this early rather than late® in development, especially if they give some convincing reasons.

"While you wait, check out MWO because there will be tons of new stuff coming out! We promise they are not just 'Mechpacks!"

Assuming work for MW5 start in late 2014/early 2015 after scraping Transverse, that give them roughly 2 years to reach working prototype stage as shown during MechCon.
Another year or 2, and they reach the usual 3 year development time for standalone PC retail title.

That could be true.

I was under assumption that they began working on it in mid 2016.

I know it makes sense to think about the ideal time for making MWO players spread to MW5 and make MW5 players spread to MWO for maximum profit, and also to avoid releasing MW5 just when MWO has finally died because everyone got fed up in the end. However, I still think PGI needs to make sure that they deliver a finished product this time, since it's a single point of purchase game.

They've already set the bar extremely high by their own descriptions of what MW5 will be. And ironically, they're using a lot of the same descriptions that they once used for MWO, which were never delivered. (Negotiating for contracts, buying dropships, using jump ships to travel around the galaxy, getting access to different markets, etc)

EDIT: Apparently, Squadron 42 is scheduled for late 2017, which could easily be pushed to 2018. It would probably not be wise to release MW5 at the same time as Squadron 42, since it will kill a lot of the buzz.

Are you sure about that? Last release I saw was "When it's ready."

As for OP... just relax and don't worry about it. It's January 2017, let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Depends on how they've set up their design to pipeline schedule, if they even have one.
The artwork department isn't the thing to worry about, i trust in PGI that they are able to do it.
Everything else is the problem.
PGI has to proof that they can do pve and progressive campaign design.
This would include game controls, joystick support, a working and functional, yet pleasing ui, an AI that is halfway decent for enemies...
A mission design beyond shoot a or b or stand in a square.
Even if they've started the design phase in 2014 (i doubt that) do you really think PGI is capable of the tasks, except artwork, awaiting for them? (until 2018, or at all)

Frankly, I wouldn't believe a PGI commitment to a delivery date even if it was etched in stone, signed with a blood seal and displayed behind bulletproof glass at the Smithsonian.

I still find it funny that people think PGI will now magically accomplish all the things they failed at MWO, like keeping deadlines, creating an economy, building a functional AI, writing something even remotely resembling a good background story ... Or just working at anything more than glacial pace.

I have absolutely no expectations on MW5 (and wouldn't surprise me if I still get disappointed by PGI), but if they really manage to get a good and finished game out until 2018, then respect where it's due.

Exactly what I was thinking. Hope it works out, for everyone's sake.

The idiom "Putting the cart before the horse" has originated in Europe, I believe. For an American, that will still be an "Eastern thing". Posted Image

we have no idea how long they have been developing mw5. they could have started way back when they started selling founders packs for all we know.

Do not forget that their license comes up for possible renewal in 2018, provided certain criteria is met. If MW5 is not released, will they have the funds, the will and ability to renew it?

Given that the video they showed us is a very alpha version of the game and PGI stated that it (the game) will be released some time in 2018, I assume that they started building the assets in mid 2016.

The idea could very well "start to brew" much earlier.

If they started in mid-2016, there's no way they'd have such a polished demo on display for MechCon. This looks like it's been in the works for quite some time.

To be honest, I'll be buying it whenever it comes out merely out of a need to make a statement that there is a market for it, the actual product is secondary to me.

Yes, a good functional game is a reasonable thing to expect, but all I really need from it is a skirmish mode where I load 2 sides with customizable mechs and play that on an relative variety of maps... mby some AI presets and wave settings.
So yeah I like my relaxation to be easy :) , and if you want it harder give the other side more mechs/waves.

If possible make the game with that and mod-able, it would be enough.
When looking at it like that it kinda seems doable even for PGI, just copy/paste MWO gameplay, add semi competent AI with an skirmish mode that you set up done, that is where I spend most of the time in every mechwarrior game so far, the story is nice and can be played 2~3 times in a year but it's the self made scenario battles that keep you interested... and if mods were a thing , well....
