Tucked away in the roadmap for February, was a small paragraph about "Floating chat" and general improvements to the in-game chat tools.
I strongly urge everyone to consider how fundamental and important improvements to MWO's in house friendslist is.
The complaints about pre-made versus PUGs are valid; a group that works together consistently is going to have a leg up on perfect strangers, and the amount of dedication towards finding a group and establishing third party communications represents a ludicrous amount of time investment to most.
I assert that most players don't have the time to join a group, but would prefer to play with the same players, at least long enough to negotiate some strategy for 'next time'.
Being able to tell a player you met "hey, let's drop together for a few" AND HAVING HIM AWARE you said as much without him randomly clicking on the miniscule chat icon hidden in the bottom row of pixels will go a long way toward the pick up group standing its ground.
Folks, let's get behind PGI on this one! This game needs better chat more than anything else.

Depends on how much they do. If they go crazy adding rooms and allowing people to group it will be crazy helpful.

I think the problem is that the ingame chat is so atrociously bad at the moment that many people are barely aware it's present., So it's hard to get excited about a feature that's only current function is to bug the hell out of you when random people send you friend invites out of no where because they spectated you're one good match of the day.
But yah, sure, if they improve it I wont complain. General chat is a crap idea though.

Gonna have to see it, to evaluate it. Like many things PGI had said.

They could break it. Like minimaps.
And then haphazardly fix it. Like minimaps.

I can't wait to get the floating chat so when all the new mechs and tech drops we can all complain about how OP it all is in the same place, for everyone playing to see!
