For the comparison-- I very much like the clan large pulse laser versus the IS large pulse laser. They don't try to 1:1 balance with each other but rather server different roles and do well within those roles. It keeps faction flavor in tact without making one or the other total garbage.

Anyway, onto the machine guns. I'm not going to throw some hard stats out there particularly because I'm going to be challenging the notion that MGs should have a max range shorter than an AC/20.

IS MG: for half a ton per MG compared to only .25 tons for Clan, IS MGs feel like are a straight up downgrade in every way. I mean, the clan MGs even sound cooler! :P

Balancing ton for ton, 1:1, however, is going to make all the clanners upset about IS having something better than their tech. I think it's silly but it's a mess better left alone.

Instead, what if we gave IS MGs a different role compared to the Clan MG, like we have given the large pulse lasers different roles?

For their weight, I feel like IS MGs sould have the advantage in the crit seeking role-- they should be more effective at stripping armor and criting components than their clan counterpart.

Now hold your horses! This is where it gets crazy!

To distinguish the Clan MG, how about we buff its max and optimal ranges to skirmishing range? Roughly ~350m (probably a bit less). The clan MG would not have the advantage in critical hits on open components over IS but it would have the range advantage-- establishing different niches for the two weapons systems.

This would globally buff MGs for both factions, but in different ways.

Thoughts?

Really depends on the hard numbers that would be used for DPS and range, but I'd like it. Same thing could be done for Flamers as well.

While we are at it, there are also flamers and NARC.

I'd take the Clan one every time because being able to spit out, like, 6 free DPS at that distance is non-trivial.

It's also bass-ackwards as f*ck that the light one has longer range, moreso than the rest of the equipment.

I was thinking a substantial boost to DPS versus open components for the IS MG over the clan MG. But I'm not new to the community nor the game-- I know that substantial changes really isn't what PGI is comfortable playing with.

Honestly, I don't care much for that. I want better effectiveness against armor. That's what interests me. When I'm dropping 6 tons to run MGs (6x MG w/ 3 tons of ammo) on something like the Arrow, it needs to be universally effective.

One thing at a time. Remember who the developer is.

This would be in addition to the better DPS overall and therefore better effectiveness versus armor.

'Points to the Clans entire schtick being longer range, and lighter AC/s on both sides having longer range than their bigger brethren'

I'm a fan personally. But I'm currently sitting here debating if I should buy the Bushwacker on launch because my nostalgia is kicking in HARD suddenly, so I might not be the best at making good decisions.

Just a useless reminder that Clan has things which are definitely better.
