Outside of the ECM, it isn't incorrect to call it like a Clan Grif. A humanoid, jump capable medium with four tightly packed SRM launchers, and space for additional energy weapons. Can even slap an AP on it to disable their ECM and totally level that playing field.

If you are just doing 4, you could do it faster with a hunchback iic... though i think the boxes on the huntsman are better....

I'm wondering when people will come to realize that mixed builds are usually much more effective. Building 1-trick pony mechs and attempting to force a very specific situation to make that mech work isn't all its cracked up to be.

Damn straight, can't tell you the amount of times i've seen LRM-only Mechs get their asses handed to them.

there's also that one Scouting drop my yen-lo managed to kill a four Stormcrow drop. the last guy was the only real challenge cause he WASN'T boating SSRM6s (course, it probably also helped we were on River City, and said "Skillcrows" didn't realize ( a ) AMS blows up ANY missiles, not just LRMs, and ( b ) half their salvos were nailing the sides of buildings and not my team).

and if you're curious, last guy was running a UAC/20 and the laser arm. if he'd just learned how to allow for the weapon placement, he probably woulda managed to shred at least two of us before we took him down. Another one of the big downsides of over-reliance on homing weapons... losing the ability to, you know, actually aim.

That's the make or break. Plus, it isn't just the 4 ASRM6. You also have 4 SPlas (technically, up to 5, but it gets toasty), to the maximum of 2 for the HBK. That pushes the alpha to 72, which will two shot any IS medium that attempts to stare down the mech. Through the thickest armor, even. You could also go 3x SPLas and 2x Flamers with ease. The marginal jump jet benefit of having that 5th thruster isn't super noticeable, but helps in certain scenarios.

So you have a mech with superior hit boxes, superior fire power, and approximately equal mobility. In my experience, I've seen most Hunchback IIC get out of scouting matches in really rough shape, while the Huntsmen spread much more effectively. What will kill an HMN will more than end a HBK-IIC, but not necessarily the other way around.

I noticed no one is talking about the Linebacker ... poor LB.

People have... someone said its like the Dragon... i think it's better than that, but it's still a bit specialized compared to the EBJ due to its high speed over pod space.

The real selling point for it as a mech pack was that it was obtainable for $20 where you couldn't get the EBJs for less than 50 (I think) by a la carte purchase.

If one had to choose a 65 tonner and had neither, I'd prefer the EBJ, heck I think I'd take a HBR over LB... It's a quick hit specialist.

I mourn, for starting tomorrow, Huntsmen will be misused. They will be abused. The poor things will be forced to carry Streak SRM into battle and never see their potential utilized.

I weep for them.

I haven't found a satisfactory loadout. What would you use?

Great timing on the Huntsman. Going to grab me enough to master one of them at least, despite the upcoming skill tree changes, because I really want a mastered Huntsman for Scouting mode. Fifty-tonners fit nicely into FP drop decks too.

Effective, but probably ill advised, MPlas boat? And by effective, I mean it works just fine, but the Huntsman isn't the best energy platform due to having odd crits. Thus the tonnage cludging with AP and AMS. It gets results, though!

So much Huntsman and so little Linebacker comment. I'd get a linebacker for c-bills... OOPS! It's available for MC. mmm. Is it harder for me to come off MC?

LBK is crazy fun but pretty limited. Dual PPC, rack of MPLs, LPL/ML mix or full splat.

I have to agree with its unfortunate limitations. Many of the stock builds are good, but the mech doesn't excel unless its running in a pack. When you've got the pack it starts to feel like cheating... but how often do find the right people for that?

I've come back after a long break, haven't seen a single Linebacker on either team. Was the poor thing DOA?

Definitely not DOA, but it requires a very different play style than the Meta builds and a lot more patience to pull out the high scores. You could say that this is one of the first mechs that is really built for a role and that role is "striker" regardless of what range you fight at. Hot erPPC sniper means shoot, dissipate heat, shoot from somewhere new. At short range, break a line, shoot one or two salvos, find cover and move and a new angle of attack. Mid range, is pretty much the same. Its really tanky for its speed which is nice, but you have to play to the mech's strengths to get the most out of it and there aren't enough people who tend to group up with it to help it excel in its wolf pack function. Every time I see it out in the field now, its usually on its own trying to perform scouting and spotting functions, doing the job of a light or fast medium, but that's only a secondary ability it has.

I'm really hoping that people start to pick it up for MC or at least c-bills next month. 3 or 4 of linebackers together would very quickly become a devastating force to be feared by all mechs.

Waiting for cbills for the LBK. In no rush to get one. Plus, the fat cbill and xp returns from the new skill tree should make it ezpz.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I really don't like the Huntsman. I just can't seem to gel with it. I'm seriously thinking about just GXPING them to basic and selling the lot of them. I'll keep the hero.

I actually am (slightly) looking forward to the full splat version which I wasn't able to do with the basic pack+hero. But... that's next month so meh.
