Low settings has always given a competitive advantage in pvp games.

You can also do this in MWO with the lod bias mod.

The LOD bias MOD? Now that's gotta be going too far...

Wow, that's a huge difference. I'm going to find the setting that removes those particles next time I play. I usually find I hate forest colony because I can never reliably see anything, now I could just see everything all the time *and* have higher FPS.

That's great.

Alternatively, PGI could add low quality fog for the low settings or just stop adding fog everywhere only when you're on high.

low particles, low (or medium...I don't notice a difference FPS wise) environment, low shadows, low post processing.
Everything else set on high.

105 fps on a decent lap top.

I'm mostly just looking to remove the particles like fog, I'd expect shadows and post processing wouldn't effect that. I don't really have too much problem with FPS, I stay above 60FPS with everything on high, which is better than most games I play anyway.

then just lower the particles. The rest was just for FPS purposes.

Hey Dr Marie Delacroix

How did you get this "LOD bias mod"? You've just clamped it to the max with your driver? If so, what video card/driver? Also no performance difference? It's strange because for me when I clamp it by a bit my lowest FPS scores increase by 2. Tested many times but I'd like to hear from others. Yet my graphics don't change that drastically, they are much more like first screenshot.

It basically looks like on this video - is it still possible to set it this way?

Also, does anyone have similar texture shimmer when playing without AA or using negative LOD bias?

Thinkpad T530. Got it on a budget where I expected it to last me a good 7-8 years before needing to upgrade. Didn't expect to get interested in any games more intensive than League of Legends... but then I discovered MWO and here I am plodding along with it begrudgingly. I'll be able to afford to upgrade or build a desktop by the time Star Citizen is ready for full release.

You have good taste. Thinkpads are nice for work, really nice. I love em. But Thinkpads have a bad performance/price ratio. I'd suggest Acer if you're after a gaming laptop that's affordable but powerful. Has only a few bells and whistles but it gets the job done. Not sure about durability yet since mine is just 2 years old but it's still working nice. Alienware and Razer can shove their bling right where it belongs. Although I'd suggest that you build a desktop since you can even buy used if you can trust the seller. Or get good deals with bnew parts.

Yeah, they're fantastic. My last Thinkpad lasted a solid 7 years, and I only decided to replace it because I had it plugged in once, tripped over the cord, and it fell screen-first onto a chess set and shattered the display. Ruined my ongoing chess match, too! Posted Image

After my graphics upgrade, the only thing I have turned down is particles I think. It was the ridiculous smoke effects that drove me insane. After killing a mech huge amounts of smoke clouds cover the screen making the after fight impossible (except that people can hit you).

Seems ridiculous but I had to turn it down just like people did in counterstrike 1.6, after they improved the smoke effects it lagged everyones PC's, most people reverted the graphics but some people used the 2D sprites instead !!!

Tree's and vegetation are annoying but I kinda like the reality so everything else is turned up to max.

One odd thing I'd suggest is that people use "Process Lasso" to boost up their CPU. As it's a game that relies on both CPU and Graphics (after the map revamps, graphics seems to be important now). This application can be set to detect games or you can manually do that, and it'll force the CPU to stay at it's highest speed. This helped with fluctuating FPS speeds, because windows doesn't think the game may need the whole boost.

Because idiocy? ... Because PGI has no clue about their own game engine?

At least there is no advantage in using one over the other. For each thing you actually see on min settings there is a thing you don't see ... like a rock formation 800m away that you try to shoot enemies through. And since corner peeking is a big thing in MWO having object boundaries drawn very differently on min/max is an unacceptable inconsistency.

On high there's still hills, that have invisible hitboxes on polar that I hit often when trying to peek with PPC builds. Would be great if PGI fixed those.

I always heard that low details would give you an advantage, but I never tried. Now, seeing the difference (thx to WARKHAN), I am a bit in shock on how big the difference is.

Better graphics or better sight...sucks that you are forced to make a decision like this.

Well it would be logical that all these effects that obstruct vision on max graphics should be present on lower graphics also, but in less detail, worse quality and such..

Completely removing the fog for low specs is a clear advantage.. especially on some maps.. and it's just wrong..

I mean, it's like you have a special module called "enhanced imaging" installed, and me, on my maxed out settings, don't have that..

just turn off environment and particles...everything else at max

i should try that, i was experimenting with medium settings for a time and it just kept crashing, and it crashed more on low. i think this game has some serious bugs in its lod-ing code. my fix was to go back to high. as a result my visibility tanked and my kdr started going down. always 60fps though. this game doesn't make any sense.

I guess this might be the right thread to ask:
which setting directly affects Thermal Vision? I noticed when I tried playing on a crapoopy laptop once that on medium (or was it...low?) that the "mech glow" isn't good at all, where on higher settings mechs really "pop out" with Thermal Vision on.
Since I don't have time to sit around experimenting with the Video Settings I keep them all... pretty high
The frickin snowstorms and flurries blind me on every snow map! And on Crimson Strait and Viridian Bog fricckin butterflies interrupt my view when I crash through trees Posted Image

When Star Citizen is released? Is that like the new "When the Cubs Win the World Series?"

It's like "when the Star League is restored" ;)

With low particles though it turns PPC bolts into a hardly noticeable bit of lightning, doesn't it? Personally I like to see where those are coming from.
With shadows on high there have been times I'd see someone's shadow before they turned a corner. It was kind of like "free sensor module" :P

There's only one answer.
Upgrade the game engine.
Had something like this in a train simulator. For a long time, it used the Jet engine designed by the company itself. Had lots of issues, disappearing objects, flickering textures, etc. Went on for about 5 years. They finally started upgrading their own simulator engine, progress and improvement.
Rather odd that to offload stuff onto the GPU, you have to lower 4 graphics settings.
Even Polar Highlands is affected, I have seen small ridges of snow that would block a shot suddenly disappear just by taking a step or two in the right direction.

This is exactly why MWO should have never gone down the road of an FPS. Battletech based games should be about the immersion into the world of Battletech and not about being a competitive FPS or esport.

Every single shooter works like this, bar none.

It's either eye-candy or clarity, PGI has nothing to do with.

You're supposed to design your graphics around looks and performance while not compromising visibility in any significant manner.

It's just common to turn down stuff because benefits of visibility is more important for playability (performance being the next important thing) than anything else.

Sorry, no benefits to framerate. The detail of the textures is still there but gets blurred by a driver setting. I'm not aware of any way to improve framerates besides going full potato in your video settings.
Disagree. Definitive FPS boost.

If you're not getting it, it's time for a new vid card, or to go on a malware/bloatware hunt on your PC.

I have more then enough power to play this game maxed out, I did play maxed out for years but lately went back to low because the game plays better

The end of the days it's about who's left standing and who got the 300k+ chills

I've found out how to milk this system effective
