New Skill Tree And New Pilots

I wonder if new players should be given"relatively" large discounts on experience and c-bill requirements for their first 1-10? mechs? Reskilling could be at normal costs but this would allow more competitive mechs for new players at less of a time and financial burden

Nah, it's not as big a deal as you think. Take most MMO's for instance, new players always spec oddly (usually) they level they get to max and THEN usually find out what they need to do. A little bit of gold to respec never hurt anyone in WoW.

That being said a secondary spec would be nice ypu can buy but switch to for free would be nice. (Aka tank spec vs DPS spec)

I dont understand how new players are supposed to save for both Mechs and the Skill Tree now, especially if they dont luck into their absolute favorite never drive another mech on their first purchase.

Agreed. A friend of mine abandoned an account and made a new one because he picked what turned out to be the wrong mech first, being desperate to get out of trials; this system is just adding another level to that. Its placing more land mines in a new players path to getting into this game.

Agreed. It's idiotic. They are having a hard time retaining players and drawing in new ones, so let's make it more expensive to level mechs, which will hurt even more when you discover you picked the wrong mech because it's one of the many junkers in the game.

Yes this system punishes new players, and it punishes new players who spend money even more heavily. Never a good idea to punish people who spend money on your game even more than people who don't. The more mechs you buy with real money the worse off you are because the costs go up exponentially. Buying a mech pack now is not a very good investment. Just get one mech you really want and a few mech bays and ignore everything else.

As relatively new player, I think its better as you don't need 3 of a kind and you don't need the massive GXP grind for modules.
With this new system I get access to cooldown mods unlike my live account.
Grind in my view is 3 times less. Yes you spend more time with the one you want of a bunch, but you will be spending that time with it anyway as its the one you like.

Yeah as one of those "new" accounts I wasn't thrilled to learn about the "buy two more 'Mechs so your have permission to grind this stuff you need." Especially dumb (and expensive) if it's a big Clan Omni that can buy the *pod* it wants for a few hundred k, plus (sharable) weapons.

If you never hope to own more than one or two total mechs then you do experience a savings, but if you hope to own more than that and planed to move modules around, then you are actually getting screwed on the prices. And if you purchased any mech pack ever you just hosed yourself.

I think there is a problem not only for new players, but for unskilled 'mechs in general.

You're forking over a not insignificant amount of your c-bill income during the initial grinding, and you aren't seeing much return on your investment at first.

For that reason, I would recommend that the first 10 nodes skilled on a 'mech cost only 25k each. Then the next ten cost only 50k each. and the next ten cost 75k each, with every node from 31-91 costing 100k each.

Graduated costs for a gradual build up of power accretion, which also allows new players a more gentle investment into the system.

EDIT: I should also point out that I spent a few matches running around in different chassis with no skills at all, to see what would happen. Unskilled mechs get melted by enemy fire in a way they often can't return, and in addition to the durability/firepower issue heat is much more of a problem for them. This isn't like modules- you can ignore modules and play normally without feeling much of a bite. This skill system DOES NOT allow that.

My guess is that they either don't care or never factored it into the equation and the skill tree prices are aimed at the hardcores that are looking for another C-bill sink.

Making gold in WoW is a joke compared to grinding C-Bills in MWO

That's the point exactly many players miss. Now you spend all the same time you did on variants for one mech. New skill tree want a new mech well start all over, that sucks. That makes it like all the other FPS MMO which would suck, cause this system had me hooked and just looking which mechs I would buy next. Cause I knew I could move modules to have some chance in a new Mech.

It boggles the mind that they would come up with a system that actively discourages the purchase of mech packs, and makes you feel bad for having purchased mech packs in the past, since this was a big source of their income.

My thoughts exactly. It only benefits those with hundreds of millions of cbills banked and stacks of modules that will be refunded. These players will get the at least a half dozen modules on most mechs. Buy new mechs and you essentially have to fund them all as well. I would need over a billion c-bills to fill out the mechs that I already own. That's almost 9,000 MORE matches for mechs I already have and theoretically already skilled up most of them.

A lot of games have done away with archaic costs on respec, and even games like WoW that had it(I'm pretty sure its free now) it was a trivial amount of gold to do. The amount it costs here is not trivial in particular for newer players.
