I would love to see npc controlled tanks and aero units. Gives a whole new strategic aspect to the game. You have to consider so much more instead of just enemy mechs. Not that they're difficult to kill but using lasers or pulse for instance could be a really bad move cause of the heat buildup. Lets say your in a city and piloting an hunchback. Tank popped out. Do you engage with your ac/20 or lasers? You have no idea if an enemy mech will come around the next corner. Like I said: for the strategic part even if it's just one game mode YES to tanks and other NPC controlled units

Just as NPC assets and you could add infantry as well. Heck, it might make ac/2 and MG valuable if you had to worry about the enemy commander calling in an airstrike down on you, a platoon of tanks waiting in ambush along with and infantry popping up shooting at you. Besides, it would make for a more immersive battlefield. Yes, the game is called "Mechwarrior Online" but mech pilots in the lore have more to worry about than just other mechs.

NPC asset that a player can purchase for in-game cash and will appear in the game as NPC's assisting the team. Any kills provided by tanks are given to the player.

See game name.

NOT - BATTLETECH ONLINE

MECHwarrior

/thread

Cute. Way back in 1986 when the MechWarrior brand was created as a roleplaying game, it specifically and deliberately dealt with rules for personal combat, random adventures, career progression, economics, vehicle/AeroSpace skills, etc.

Indeed, the MechWarrior name was supposed to be a reference to the fact that it wasn't all about battling in Mechs like BattleTech was, the emphasis was very much on the out-of-cockpit action. Adventures like hijacking JumpShips or performing special operations raids. By 1991, MechWarrior was dealing roughly equally with characters of all types and an AeroJock was as welcome in the ruleset as a MechJock.

Since then, almost all MechWarrior video games have had vehicles and AeroSpace assets in droves - far more (arguably) than in TT.

So no, this isn't BattleTech Online. It's MechWarrior Online :- and that's why it can incorporate the wonderfully broad spectrum of that brand's history.

I would like to see player controlled tanks/artillery and perks that let you call in air support. some of my best remembered matches with Battletech© where with a lance of tanks against mechs.

I assume that in the future tanks, artillery and air will be, it is possible under control of the computer, as support or missions.

Only NPC nonmech assets please. Oh sure getting trolled by LRM VTOLs is soooo much fun but lets get mechs right first.

PS:LRM air assets and their pilots can burn in a pit of cobras.

i'm all for having NPC tanks (or maybe tanks controlled by dead members of your team?) guarding the base or being able to call in airstrikes by aerospace fighters

i think one of the things that made mechcommander great was that it showed the whole range of troops, from infantry up to mechs, and showed how the mechs were at the top but not invulnerable. i would love to see some introduction of those forces here

All for it if they can find a way to include them without making them over the top. Tanks were tough in the table top game and aero fighters were a horror, but both had limits on their use and survivability. And I think they should probably be npc assets. Easier to balance and control their use that way.

I wouldn't be totally opposed to tanks, if they were done right. But a big HELL NO!!! to Aerospace and VTOL. In MW:LL they are nothing but grief engines. Aerospace can loiter well above your sensor range, dive bomb you with a major alpha strike, then pull back up beyond a 'Mechs range to hit them. VTOLs can hover directly above a 'Mech (where it has no hope of tilting back far enough to hit the VTOL) and do damage with total impunity.

they should make these "call ins" similar to the orbital strike from tribes:ascend. players earn points for objectives during game, and can call in backup from NPC 'copters or tanks or bombing runs. like how in mechcommander 2 there was the minelayer, repair vehicle, scout copter ect.

edit:

or maybe just a survival mode of waves of mixed mechs and tanks/air units

Please no tanks, fighters, etc... of any NPC variety. I dont want to lose a good battle thats coming down to the wire then all of a a sudden I die to an NPC!!! That would completely wreck the entire drop and competitive spirit.

Maybe if they add PvE at some point give it to the players who want to go that direction.

Both. I've always wanted a battletech game that had mixed forces... Infantry might not be viable but armor and air assets are.

yeah I think it could be an interesting addition to certain game modes. Heck I even think there should be infantry and gun emplacements too. Make a combined arms total war style game mode with players being mechs used to defend or take strategic locations. I think it would be really cool to move into a city and then be set upon by infantry with rockets, deal with land mines, IEDs, ect. Make it an option and if not enough people decide to play in those style games drop it.

these should not be player controlled. Maybe make them partial player directed with simple commands like patrol here or defend this.

Maybe some sort of moba game-mode, with infantry and tanks as creeps in the lanes, with turrets and calliopes as tower variants, and dropships as the final objective?
