I do not disagree with this IF the Mechs can be balanced with quirks and base stats. That has never happened so far. Using the Skill Tree would give the players the opportunity to do the balancing.
If they do not limit SP then I feel that they need to dial back some of the benefit levels that the player applied quirks provide. They cannot or at least should not introduce the Skill Tree in its present iteration because some of the Mechs are just going to be way too strong.
I definitely agree the skill tree presents some significant balance concerns, but the root cause is the lack of mech balance and that some nodes are just too strong.
Honestly it hasn't happened because they haven't actually gone and addressed the tech imbalances. And actually, pre-Kodiak, balance was pretty good. Like, it was great. Then they nerf some things, rescaled things, and threw in a super meta awesome-sauce Clan 100 ton BattleMech, and that took a shat on the balance.
When you consider that if you were to hand IS mechs Clan tech, the KDK wouldn't be so OP anymore, you realize that there must be a way to balance the KDK and other mechs. Tech balance and quirks should be used, that is the way to do it, you just have to be willing to balance the tech, then you don't even need strong quirks most of the time.
