Is it possible to change profile avatars and how? Can I use one I have or just the ones MWO provides ?

Its always just whatever faction you are affiliated with.

The "avatar" shows you ingame alignment and is always taken from your ingame decisions (faction play).
You can add a badge (like the on i have under my faction symbol) if you actually have a badge (from mech'packs most commonly.
That too is drawn from the ingame "title/badges" you chooce to display.
Both are also shown ingame on the scoreboard and the matchmaker screen in faction play.

The one thing you can freely choose is your forum signature, you can edit it if you go to your own profile, click on "view forum profile" and then "edit my profile" > signature.

if the avatar is split like mine that says you are with a merc unit currently under contract to ^{(at the time of post House Marik's Free Worlds League)}, the top half shows Merc, the bottom half shows the faction flag, but yes the avatar only shows your alegiance, however there is space for a badge and title underneath, you can change that ingame on the home screen, titles and badges, assuming you have unlocked any ^{(in my case the title overlord and the gold sheild, nether of which can be obtained at current)}
