Only thing I didn't see mentioned already was using regular old zoom. I use zoom a lot, at all ranges other than point blank. It helps me hold the target, but I can only imagine what spectators think with my zoom constantly going in and out.
Speaking of spectating, due to the sync issue already mentioned, it can appear from the spectator's point of view that your shots are not even close. However, the (only) way to know for sure if the weapon struck the target is to watch the target reticle. If it turns red, then the pilot aimed correctly and hit the target, no matter how far off the weapon graphics where shown on the screen.
