TOPIC SAYS IT ALL.
SHUTTING DOWN SHOULD COUNTER SAT SWEEP.

IF NOT SHUTTING DOWN, THAN BEING UNDER COVER SHOULD.

Well, except for the fact that your mech is X tons of metal that is easily detected by a magnetic scan.

Then why don't dead mechs show up on scan?

Nice comeback!

Power-down -counter is actually a good idea... until the enemy drops lights and waits for the sweep to charge you and kill 1/2 your powered down team?

Here is a modification to the OPs sugestion,

powered up Mechs can show detailed info and give a proper indicator on the map, (and maybe Mechs powered down for less than 5 seconds before the scan hits should also show up because those would still be giving off some sort of trace, and make powering down to avoid the scan more of a risk).

powered down and destroyed Mechs (including the Mech shaped objects on the map) should give some sort of weak signal, prehaps akin to seismic sensor pings.

Good luck convincing 12 players on your side to do that (if it were implemented).

It's bad/hard enough convincing people "R" to target or move/group up together or even shooting UAVs down.

lol'd hard. So true. Only time that would work, 12mans... And people cry about them enough as it is.
Teamwork would be even more OP.

Actually wait - There would now be 12-man hackusations.

I don't care about other players. I want to be able to hide when I'm trying to sneak up behind the enemy in a light.

Oh c'mon Deathlike don't be so glum. First the idea is interesting and second I see friendly UAVs shot down ALL the time by teammates.

I like the idea. I don't worry too much about the 12-mans using it because more often than not they're on the side that has the sweep.

A magnetic scan from orbit?

BAP has a max range of 1000m, the typical orbit of a satellite is about 500x that or more.

To be fair, there are magnetic imaging satellites, but most of them are used to measure the Earth's magnetic field. For a planet with a magnetic field it would be quite hard to pinpoint a 70 ton battlement through all the interference. I'm not saying it can't be done, what I'm saying is, most surveillance satellites are visual or thermal.

Now this satellite does also somehow jam out all enemy sensors so, maybe it's more powerful than I think :P

Edit: There are synthetic aperture radar satellites, but due to the time and distance reqiried, those are pretty much only good for survey work. I'm not sure what other scanning technology exists, but a mech that is under hard cover (like in a hangar or in a tunnel) would be very hard for most satellites to spot.

Hmmm seems you have a defense against satellite sweep as it is... its called don't lose so many scouting matches that the enemy has access to it... Making it possible to counter the sweep would be just one more reason to not bother with scouting...
