Greetings,

Returning to play after almost 3 years, I discovered that my ping value has doubled. I have not moved and my internet is fine. I suspect the NA server, which was located in Montreal, has moved west, though I cannot confirm that anywhere.

FWIW, I am in North Carolina and used to have a ping of around 45ms. Now I am around 95ms. It is a noticeable difference.

Can anyone confirm the NA server move?

Thanks,

Ghengis

What about contacting the MWO Tech Support service directly?
technical@mwomercs.com
They are supposed to answer questions about connectivity.

A warm welcome back to MWO !

One can google for "how to improve ping in windows" and there are a few suggestions there.

You can also contact technical@mwomercs.com and perhaps they can provide a few more suggestions as well.

That said, I'm facing latency well into triple-digits, despite using LAN + fiber optical cable.
It's still playable in such a situation ;)

Same here. I live in the St. Louis, MO area and returned last month after ~3 year absence. Not only did PGI knock me down from tier 1 -> 5 (Cool. Challenge accepted), but my ping doubled. It used to be around 40. It is now 80.

Ironically, my Charter internet speed and gaming hardware are significantly faster than when I last played 3 years ago.

80ms ping is certainly playable, so I am not too motivated to look into it. It's just annoying that it doubled.

I noticed from Queensland Australia to Sydney Aus my ping is 85-89.. Which is really really high.. to Sydney, so i'm feeling the MWO servers are generating some issues some where i have no idea why..

Standard ping to Sydney from me should be around 40-45..

well wherever the NA server is, its giving consistent 35ms from my location, so its not locked away behind a bad firewall. And I have Oceanic deselected, as 260ms pings aren't fun.

Just to follow up, the NA server is indeed still in Montreal, ip address 192.99.109.129.

I still get crappy pings of 90-100 and lag in game, while on my second screen I am pinging at around 40ms. For a few brief seconds when I drop and am waiting for the countdown to finish, my ping will be in the 40s. It then bounces up to the 90s and stays there for the entire match.

Before I stopped playing 3 years ago I never really noticed the performance degradation when pings were high on the eu or oceanic servers. But now on the NA server it is quite bad, with teleporting and the slow motion effect being regular occurrences. My favorite is the war horn delay after a kill, sometimes as much as 3 or 4 seconds.

Anyway, I appreciate the input and will contact technical support with my findings.

thx

Based on the description in this post, it isnt ping per se but packet loss and/or jitter. Jitter is where packets do not arrive in the same order as they were sent.
  • Wired or wireless connection? From computer to router to modem to ISP?
  • ISP?
  • Rebooted modem/router (unplug for 30 secs then plug back in)
  • Flush DNS?
  • Do you have access to a VPN Or try out one or two free VPN to troubleshoot? Ping may increase some but the point is to have a clearer, less troublesome connection, ie low jitter/packet loss.

And just like that, last weekend, my ping returned to its former glory of 40.
Too bad I hadn't done a before and after trace route, to see if that changed for the better.
