Does anyone else see that we are entering a new golden age of mecha to feed our stompy robbit fix? Agree or disagree?

Yes, a new age. And I believe for MW:O, its final age. I believe the timeline jump and the skill tree are going to be the last big programming endeavors for MW:O. There will be balance passes, a few more maps, and maybe a FW v3.0. Beyond that, I think more and more resources will be going into MW5.

If this final epoch lasts as long as the clan invasion, we've got another four years of stomping, here. And after that, we'll have MW5 to look forward to.

I'm pretty stoked.

They raised it $10 per package a week ago.

"If you have friends who are kicking themselves for not backing the project earlier, let them know they can still get in on our Digital Reward Tiers, including the MechWarrior level which grants access to the Kickstarter Beta. Just send them to to our Late Reinforcements website to get in on the action. But tell them to act fast! On February 15th, the prices for each digital reward level will go up by $10."

So, realistically, anyone could make a game about giant robots and if it was competently made, it'd be successful?

Uhh...no.
Hawken, while designed as more of a video game, had some good hype but now I don't see it as much. Even MWLL is a very niche game. I don't know of many that made it on consoles. let alone PC.

I'd say so yes... I have high hopes that HBS's BattleTech game will be only the first of many from them.

Now there's one glaring missing piece ... if ONLY Catalyst got its act together with the tabletop line. As far as I can tell, there's been a surprising amount of interest from relatively young people in the TT game -- people who entered the franchise through the video games. But currently the situation is that the Introductory Boxed Set has been out of print for several months, and no information about when it'll be available again.

Around the MW2 era there was also Metaltech's Earthsiege (1 & 2) by Dynamix. Good games in their own right. I would classify it as Terminator with mechs (the whole genocidal A.I. trying to destroy humanity thing).

Battledrome (also Dynamix) was a good mech game. It has A.I. bots, but it was really made to be a multiplayer title over LAN.

They were both fun MechWarrior alternatives for their time.

LOL Oh my god I forgot about those! I remember Dynamix too. Back when I had LucasArts sims and Sierra. I couldn't get into EarthSiege as much. I think it was the mecha design for me. Same reason why the Hawken designs made me barf.

Yeah, the designs of the robots weren't the greatest, and the weapons were comically over sized. Still, I remember having a lot of fun with the first one. Never played the sequel though (only watched it as a Let's Play).

I played the crap out of Battledrome! It had a betting mechanic where as the lowest tier I could challenge the highest teir (AI) to a match, betting all my money, with the condition he couldn't use any weapons. He always seemed to take it so in one match I doubled my cash and would greatly raise in rank. The AI player would just follow me around and bump into me while I slowly tore through his armor with my tiny weapons.

You forgot the resurgence in the Battletech books we are also seeing. The old books are getting both reprinted and made into epubs, while we are getting new books from M Stackpole (HBS Battletech) and the new story about the Minnesota tribe (which is turning out to be a good read so far).

WOLVERINES!!

WWR came out about 2 or so years ago, so not exactly new, but it has been growing its player base and getting constant new updates. One issue with the game I have, is I maxed out my workshop tier (15) and player tier (30) a year ago, so the grind became really stale to me.

The 2014 and 2015 for WWR was a bit more of a "beta" stage for WWR. 2016 was the year it skyrocketed, particularly after it was introduced to the Android platform. Growing its player base is a euphemism. It skyrocketed --- 20 million downloads total by September 2016, and its announcement prior to being purchased by Russian portal My.com, was that it had as many as 500,000 players online.

Considering that War Thunder has over 15 million installs, and attains 60,000 to 70,000 peak online, WWR's numbers might be similar for *each* platform. Considering there are two platforms --- Android and Apple, you can be looking at a player base much larger than War Thunder.

As for the grind, workshop tier 15 and Level 30 means nothing. This is really just starting the game. The fast leveling is nothing more than a gimmick to "force" graduate noobs, bronze and silver tier players --- and in particular players who camp the lower tiers and refuse to go up, as well as seal clubbers --- to the gold tier.

The real grind is to get as much credits and workshop points to obtain gold mechs and weapons and then grind them to 12/12, with each level doubling the cost of the upgrade over the previous, and battle the "Gold Tier". I have grinded over 80,000 workshop credits and over 100 million thensilvers to accumulate a reservoir for getting then upgrading mechs like the Rhino and Carnage, weapons like the Aphids, Tarans, Tridents, and Trebuchets. This can be an expensive process If you are not converting gold outright, grinding workshop points from free to get a full hanger of Rhinos is going to take a long time, not to mention the cost of getting weapons like Tarans which require workshop points. Since you only get a small amount of gold from winning, and accomplishing mission goals, to accumulate enough gold to get a Fury or a Galahad from free will take a long time, unless you are willing to dip your wallet as a short cut.

That's the part I got an issue with, since the moment I started meeting high silver to gold tier, my win rate started dipping, until I am forced to equip Aphids, Zeus, Gekkos, and Plasmas. The next stage is whether I should purchase Furies, Galahads, Rhinos and Carnages, and play the freaking Fury meta (Fury with three Zeus/Trebuchets/Tridents/Kang Dae).

Typical Gold tier player with an expensive hanger

Dynamix made the first Mechwarrior game, MW1. They were in the process of making MW2, as it seemed they were confident in getting the contract, when FASA switched the developers from Dynamix to Activision. Talk about getting pissed off.

They took whatever they were building as their version of MW2, and recycled that into Earthsiege. That's why ES1 and ES2 looked more similar to MW1 than MW2 is to MW1.

After that, FASA, which basically explains why I have no trust in those people and the business acumen of Jordan Weisman, switched developers from Activision to Microprose for MW3. And guess what Activision did? They turned the same team into making Heavy Gear 1 and 2.

And then FASA moved from Microprose to Microsoft for MW4, and sold the digital rights to Microsoft. Jordan went back into business, starting up Wizkids and with it Hero Clix, followed by the table top clix game, Mechwarrior Dark Age, which lasted from 2003 to 2006. Wizkids was sold to Topps, and with it, the models and miniatures rights to Battletech and Mechwarrior. How MW:DA got screwed up is another long story.

But guess what, after Mechwarrior 4, and Mechassault's attempt to help sell Xboxes, Microsoft dropped the franchise like a smelly potato, and decided for the XBox 360, to contract FROM Software, the makers of Armored Core, to do Chromehounds for the 360. They also discovered that as a sci fi franchise, Halo can sell more of their XBoxes. When Microsoft wanted a game to highlight their Kinect peripheral, they went to FROM Software again, by then famous for Dark Souls, to so a WW2 style version of Steel Battalion. Seems to me, that since 2006, Microsoft has internally decided, they can't make money out of a Mechwarrior franchise game or use it to sell more XBoxes.

With each new XBox generation, Microsoft tries to introduce a sci-fi mech game that can sell XBoxes. For the Xbox One generation, guess what --- its obviously Titanfall.

With Microsoft holding the rights and sitting on it doing nothing, no big ticket game company is going to do another Mechwarrior.

So this, is a basically a short story of how NOT to do Franchise Management. Especially when you have the digital rights and the model rights to different companies, Microsoft and Topps. You want a shining example of Franchise Management, go look at the Pokemon Company.

You ask me if I am willing to invest my money on another Jordan Weisman venture, I say :PPP.

Why does everyone clamor for Battletech? You guys realize that it's turn-base game right? Like you are literally NOT playing a stompy robbit. It's for people that like to play the tabletop game and/or enjoy the lore (and that last bit is questionable, as BT has one of the weakest cliche story of all science fiction genre)

no sir, that honor goes to Warhammer 40k... at least Battletech has a sense of optimism, instead of being edgy mcedgelord the story.

Hmmmmm.... Blue Noah might be it. The underwater carrier is familiar, but I more remember the sub that is beneath it.
