Override Trick: Pushing the Heat System

First I must advise you to put the override key close to your movement keys if you are using a keyboard. If you are using a joystick, let's hope there's somewhere nearby.

Start the game with override engaged. (Default O Key) If you breach your 100% heat, you have 3, count em, 3 seconds to get your mech to the safest piece of cover you can find. Immediately toggle override back on. DO NOT hit the s key when preforming this maneuver!!! Run forward and turn if you have to.

The goal to increase your overall damage is One to steady your aim, and Two to push your heat to its maximum. I'm talking 98%. Be sure to tell your team to "RUN HOT OR DIE TRYING!!!!!!!!!!" or "EVERYBODY PUSH IT TO 99% FULL POWER YAAAHHHH!". The battle cry helps. No really. Posted Image

Always test your weapons, weapon groups, and damage in academy, or training grounds FIRST.

Patience is key, You will do more damage, live longer, get more Cbills and better scores the longer you are alive. Don't be a :30 second hero.
This does not mean hide in the back.

just because you recieve contradictory advise from 2 diferant people does not mean ether of them is wrong,

some weapons/loadouts/Mechs are highly dependant on who us using them, so just because someone says loadout 1 is rubbish, loadout 2 is perfect and the other says loadout 1 is perfect, loadout 2 is rubbish does not meen ether will work for you.

also Koniving is usualy (but not always) right

Break line of sight to break missile locks and you will never be bothered by lrms, break away from the trajectory of the missiles when you need to evade them.

People have always been complaining that "My team is bad".

It's still possible to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat by ensuring that my own contribution to the team is significant.

Get familiar with chain firing ASAP. Practice each map on the testing grounds to see how it affects the heat buildup of your build. Once your heat reaches critical practice chain firing your weapons at targets to avoid overheating. Overheating leaves you helpless because your mech shuts down and is an easy target.

As a rule, it's better to hide and cool, actually. It's not worth staying exposed for small shots. Chain firing is a desperation only measure.

Show Target Overlay, a very useful tool (I set it to the shift key for quick access)

9 times out of 10 you will have players that do not communicate that they are engaged, or taking heavy damage. You may also not be able to find players using the help command from the command wheel. With the show target overlay key (Default Q I think) your screen will bring up the pilot names of your allies around you and also show you the percentage of your teammates. You can use this to find teammates that are using the help command or to find players that are taking damage. If you see a friendly drop 60%, you can assume that he just walked into the enemy team. If you see percentages drop at all that means someone nearby is damaging them. Keep this to yourself okay Posted Image!

Instead of chasing the back of a mech's upper torso, go for its butt. The legs generally twist slower than the upper torso, meaning I just eliminated torso twisting. What now ace pilot? AS AN ADDED BONUS, stand directly behind that enemy mechs legs, to prevent it moving said legs.

Certain mechs have no butts. If they have no butt, you can try an XL check if it is an innersphere mech like the black jack. Your other option is to leg that enemy mech instead of shooting it in the back. Legs can be shot from every direction, making it a better hit and run strategy. Also I have noticed that enemies shot in the leg do not turn around while fighting. You didn't hear that. Posted Image

Frequently look at your minimap. Use it to keep close to your team as well as notice any trends in enemy movements.

To build off my previous tip:

Unless you have LOADS of experience and 100% certainty (not just "i heard" or "i thought") maybe don't toss out random bits of advice =p That is how bad advice takes root and then never dies off.

That makes sense. Ignore my tip about chain firing but do practice the maps and see how each affects your heat scale. That and map knowledge helps out in a match. Yeah.

@Jingseng... Guilty as charged. *hangs head in shame*

How to back out of cover for dummies:

Go to the training grounds.
Activate your mech blinkers [Check Directional Arrow in Settings]. Find a barrier between you and your imaginary enemy.
Posted Image

Check!

Next twist your legs towards your safe space.

Posted Image

Check!
Next get out of 3rd Person mode by pressing F3. Back out if necessary until you are able to shoot at your imaginary enemy (S key by default). Point your weapons at your imaginary enemy and fire!

Posted Image

Check!!!

Finally hold down the W KEY at MAX SPEED until you are completely within your safe space.

Posted Image

CHECK!!!!

Now without changing the direction of your directional arrow repeat step 3 and 4 until satisfied. If the situation becomes unfavorable for you, hold the w key until you have reached a suitable new safe space.

Step 5, there is no step 5. Posted Image

some mechs have jump jets, use this tool to access the ~3rd dimension~

jumping onto a building or ledge can give you some unexpected angles and allow you to get some surprise shots on people, or shortcuts into key areas early.

watch out for exposing yourself to too many enemies.

Free Look is like using the force. It locks your upper torso in place so you can see far to your right or left (where you shouldn't be able to see). If you lock onto an enemy, you can still see where they are even though your cockpit may be blocking your view - with the red outline to guide you. You can use it on the retreat in a locust, by using it to check behind you without entirely turning your mech around. If you have a mouse, if you have an extra mouse button use free look. Free look also allows you to spin your arms around really fast.

I'll give you some examples where this is really useful. Your in your atlas S, with 4 SRM6+A, and 1 AC20. If your like me, and you realize the usefulness of the SRMs, you like to sacrifice your right torso first. This can be difficult to do without breaking sight with the enemy your trying to kill. Most of the time you might find yourself trying to block the enemy blind. With Free Look, you don't have to turn far to retain your lock and see the outline of the enemy mech.

Your in your locust, fighting many different enemies, and you cannot afford to stop to see if your going to be shot. The solution? With free look engaged you can twist a little bit to the right and get a better glimpse of what's behind you without taking your finger off the W key.
