I am have been dropping a lot of mixed CW groups lately and I am irritated at the mutation of the pronounciation of LRM from "lurm" to "larm".

Words lacking vowels have traditionally been pronounced with a U sound as in GRRR when describing a growl. Lurm is in keeping with the larger societal of spellings which lack vowels.

I know this petty, but lurm is part of the lore and heritage of these forums. Many lurmageddon threads exist and are occasionally necroed with their original title spelling. A solid body of evidence exists proving the U sound has been accepted for years.

The fact that larm is becoming prevalent represents a failure to transmit the customs and values already established in this game. This makes me sad. I hold established norms above those created by noobs.

Is this an inside joke I am not aware of, perhaps a mockery of something Russ recently spoke or is it indicative of player base turnover?

First of all, I haven't noticed anything other than "lurms" used. Never heard "larms".

Second, congratulations, you've found THE least important thing to complain about. I'm actually seriously impressed.

You definitely got a good chuckle out of me.

Maybe people are using bad microphones but the sound is there. Why would you sound out R as "are" but not the L as "ell"? The U sound is more consistent in this regard.

People are doing this in the FP longships on the FRR hub. I am not crazy.

I don't know what to tell you outside of them having accents or some sort of inside joke.

I can see your reverse psychology working and more people saying larms after this thread. even if the only reason is that they think it annoys someone (not that I have ever heard someone say that even once)

But the question is why do you want more people to start using "larms"?

You want me to start complaining about people being too entitled with their gifs, and how people need to put more effort into their posts and upload/edit their own material instead of using a reaction gif used 5 times today on the same forum? Because I can be petty and start that line of complaining to be even worse than his complaint. :P

i blame the education system. we need a system that lets the teacher thwack those that disrespect the english language with a yard stick. if such a thing would have existed i might have used capitalization and apostrophes appropriately in this post. that said i dont understand why people actively want to sound like idiots.

for the record i just call them lrms as its fewer characters to type. when pronounced, i say 'el are em'.

to the "language is always evolving" trolls, i should remind you that evolution is supposed to be a slow process. i shouldnt have to memorize 30+ years of generational slang.

Roll 1d6:

1. You want to wager money on that?
2. Perhaps you should get a professional to evaluate that?
3. I heartily disagree with this assertion.
4. Of course you aren't... Do you need the straps on your straighjacket tightened?
5. Hey, I believe you, buddy! Now, can you do me a favor and tell me if this rag smells like chloroform to you?
6. (Hello, 9-1-1 Operator? Yes, I think he's off his meds again, how soon can you get help out here?)

Actually, among the new players in Potato Warfare, they are referred to as "skill rockets."

What? It takes skill to stand still, zoom and hold those locks long enough for 1 or 2 to hit the target instead of the hill he's behind. Skill, man. Skill.

It annoys me when people use -ai to make a word plural in English. Sadly, if enough people use it long enough it becomes part of the language.
