TS3 is more established, discord is gaining in popularity and has a better chat app. Discord is really taking off in mobile gaming guilds, e.g Clash of clans, Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes, etc because of it's chat and mobile app.

For MWO, most units are using either TS3 or Mumble for voice chat.

Discord is superior software, easily.

But most of MWO still uses TS, so, blah.

People use TS cause it has been around a very long time and is simple. Havent tried discord but rumors are it is better than TS.

Discord is wonderful.
  • Text Chat - also able to see text chat history while you were away (if it's enabled for the server)
  • Mobile App - receive chat notifications on your phone, or speak to online users on your phone.
  • Be a part of multiple servers and have the ability to easily swap between them
  • Easily invite people to your server
  • Easily create your own server
  • Create multiple voice channels (aka "rooms") on your server
  • Create multiple text channels on your server
  • Can poke through your list of servers and see who is active. Also able to read chat and type to other servers without disconnecting from your current one.
  • Share files easily by drag-and-drop
  • Direct messaging system
  • Friends list, Block list, and Pending list
  • Roles/Hierarchy system for appointing admins/ranks, etc.
  • Built in game overlay for voice icons / names to see who is speaking.
  • Ties in with steam account to keep you connected to friends who also have discord (as well as other platforms)
  • Excellent sound quality
  • A single server can host up to 5000 concurrent online users...

Can do all this through either the web browser (makes it easy to connect friends in your server without having to download and install software, just send them the invite list, they make an account, and they're in). Or can also just download the app to your desktop or phone.

The list goes on man... that's just the tip of the iceberg and just some stuff that you will encounter... not only that, it's free.
(there is a premium option to basically just unlock the ability to have animated avatars, custom emojis, and a 50mb file upload limit, rather than the basic 8mb... it's like the F2P cosmetic microtransactions for the communications world)

As someone said, Discord is superior in every way.
I can never go back to TS or Vent; they just feel so archaic and primitive now...

Discord is just amazing. Most of the gaming groups I'm friendly with have switched to Discord. Discord made the Battlenet voice option that just released obsolete before it dropped.

In another year or so everyone but the most stubborn will have switched.

Why not both?

I don't see either being bad, but they are different.

Don't restrict yourself when it comes to VOIP.

I won't disagree that discord makes it convenient to inhabit a multitude of servers at once, has great text chat, and persistent id's which make direct messaging a breeze. It has the wonderful benefit of being free too.

But TS3 has better DDOS protection if you care about something like that. It also has better bot options. I've noticed that a few of the music bots on discord lag. TS3 has much better permission handling. It also has a built in file sharing service. TS3 also sports a higher quality audio quality in general. It also costs money to host a server.

So I agree with Deathlike, use both. TS3 is for yourself and your closest buddies and discord is for ad hoc coms in serveral games, advice communities, and stuff like that.

Wait what? lol

Why would you ever spend the monthly fee for a TS server just to have casual discussion with, like, 5 people?
If it’s just you and a buddy, you could even just use Skype? Which also has all the basics?

Not to mention Discord simply has better chat functionality, which IMO is a way better environment for smaller casual groups of people. (sharing a video link, a file, imgur links, etc)

Discord is far superior. It allows for our unit to chat all day and become a tigher knit community than TS ever did.

I prefer TS due to the fact that it uses almost no bandwidth, therefore almost no in game lag, voice packet loss, or voice lag. Discord is also quite good, but not as forgiving as far as bandwidth is concerned. Mumble is a cobbled together joke, and Skype can go die in a fire!

To answer the OPs question

For MWO - TS is the most popular still . Apart from MS, I can't think of any of the bigger/active units that use Discord.

For the time being :)

Rarely has anything stayed free forever. Hook people in, then charge em. Usual way most things go.

Well they do have the premium option for some extra things like higher upload limit, avatars and emojis...
I doubt they'll ever move away from not being free for a basic app with all the functionality.

Question is, will they put major features behind a paywall then?
...
Major Features? No. I really doubt that. If they stick to their premium model for the lesser important things, but things that people might care about, they'll do just fine. Their call to fame is to ditch TS (and Skype)... TS costs money, so if Discord doesn't charge money, that's a huge plus for them and sets them above in that regard.. Skype doesn't cost money (for p2p calls), so that's keeping Discord from charging on comparable features.

For instance, I can use Spotify on my computer for free. No problem there. The web-browser doesn't even have ad's (the desktop app does)...
However, I need a premium service if I want Spotify on my TV, or download music to my phone for example.

Discord is obviously a different platform than Spotify, but both give you the option to pay for luxury, rather than necessity. And I have no problem if they follow that trend. If they whip up something I think is pretty cool, I'll probably jump on board too like I did with Spotify.

I like Discord tons better than TS3. For a lot of the reasons already stated.
