As to escort itself. I don't like it because its utterly artificial. I mean I know, I know, there is no lore in this game, "realism" is space magic, and looking for "reasons" for just about anything is futile, etc. But why is a wandering Atlas with no weapons even present? Cuz its a VIP? Well, if that's the case would it not be in said VIP's best interest to share his plans with his escorts? Perhaps even even bring some weapons of his own on his 100 ton war machine? Maybe give him basic instruction on how to twist or even make an effort to stay with his escorts? But no. The mode is a guy getting dropped off with an armed escort and then randomly walking around a battlfield until a drop ship picks him up when he's done with his drunken stroll. That isn't a VIP that's an attempted suicide.
I admit however that when I am on the attack side, I love the mode on Frozen. That stupid VIP walks right across the middle sometimes to fulfill his apparent deathwish. It's great. If you're careful you can do over a 1000 damage on the VIP alone. Cuz the big dummy just keeps on a wandering.
TLDR: Escort is stupid, limiting and is about as immersive as Russ's original plan for randomly located goodie crates.

Given that C-bills, PSR, and XP are heavily based around how much damage you do, the guys who just cap the base without fighting are the true idiots. They're wasting everyone's time because you end up getting literally nothing out of the match. If they wanted the game mode to revolve around capturing bases then they should pay me to capture a base. They don't, hence why I go out and shoot people then play the mini-game afterwards.

Game modes which make that end early are game modes I do not enjoy
Conquest is generally over by the time caps come, and gives you extra Cbills. It's an okay game mode.
Unlike cap rushing Assault, sod those guys.
Skirmish, Dom and Conquest are the modes I can enjoy playing.
Escort is just painful in Potato land, even without the map consideration.
Positioning is all the tactical input I need.
Visibility wise, it's just unpleasant being forced to play in thermal. It's bleak, grey. When there are leaves all over your cockpit, it's the same story, you can't make out mechs without using Thermal, or going full Predator with ACs.
Again, I'm here to play Shooty Stompy Robots and enjoy myself, not walk around in a Black and White movie and standing in squares (or circles)
Yes, but one cannot design a game around what you enjoy. Well, I suppose you could design your own. Because enjoyment is subjective. And there are *gasp* those who like maps and modes that make them play differently, because unicorns and rainbows on every map? Is frankly, quite boring in a "war game". Since changing the base layout AND adding Rain and Fog, Veridian, for example, went from my personal least favorite map, to probably my favorite.
As long as both teams are under the same limitations... I'm pretty OK with that.

there are certainly many things they could do to make Escort better, no denying. But when people are going to complain about anything that interferes with playing TDM, well, it's irrelevant.

Maybe you should play the objective more, bro.

1. Give the defending team the route the so is going to take.
2. Give the Atlas weapons so it can shoot back.
3. Make the Atlas twist through incoming fire.
4. Make the Escort a armored vehicle of some sort.
5. Make the Escort a randomly assigned player from among the heaviest mechs in the team.

Fun, but I pity the poor fool on a drop where there is only one assault.
Really ought to be the VIP is a locust or a cheetah (etc.)

Making the Escort a player would be a lot more fun. That might actually make the game play differently. Right now, escort is just like every other non-skirmish game. "Kill them all. Play the mini-game afterwards." Only if you're attacking you get to damage farm his arms and legs once you kill the bad guys for moar C-billz. Again, if ppl kill the VIP early you actually get less out of the match. Damage = C-bills and XP = the only thing anyone really cares about.

If the player just got to control a stock D-DC it wouldn't be so bad. A lot more fun than dealing with whatever excuse they have for AI.

I had forgotten how terrible that idea was floated out initially. It tells you how out of touch with the game you had to be with that design and concept.

I don't think the lead game designer and the CEO have ever been *in touch* with the player base ever since closed beta ended.

Until a troll player gets selected as the VIP and decides to suicide run into the enemy because they hate the game mode. Escort just tries to bring back the missions that everyone hates in every FPS. It also doesn't help that the maps simply aren't designed for this game mode (especially Crimson, which is still one of the worst maps in the game). They would've been better off copying the payload game mode and maps from TF2/Overwatch and bringing in the respawn dropship mechanic from CW as that would improve the game mode.
As it stands though, Escort just doesn't work as a game mode.

The only thing you could do is lower the payout for the VIP for being a total derp if he were picked. Properly designed incentives would have a shot of making it work at the very least (even in older CS versions, it'd still mean something). Of course, gamemode design is Lostech here.

Seems like a good thing to me since those three see way too much play as it is in the age of voting.

Then the onus is on the defenders to make sure the crazy VIP gets to the dropship real quick ... even if they have to drag him kicking and screaming!
