I think it would be great to at least have one pilot to add skills to. I like the idea of having 4 for the drop decks.
You could buy jumpsuits (colors like mechs), helmets, decals, and I love the idea of buffs. Also, I want to walk around my mech bays.

Wouldn't It Be Cool If Mwo Enabled Multiple Pilot Personas?

I don't think this is very practical or useful on the whole.
The only time this would've been relevant was when there was a FP/CW conflict and you wanted to participate on both sides of the conflict. While there may be issues with potential abuse, most people would've probably stuck with a side for the duration, but it's just about being able to declare which side to be on as necessary.
It's not that different with Mercs, but it's more like some people wanted a Clan and an IS profile as they wished (even if it was roleplaying).

Pilot skills/experience gain are just bad in pvp. It's either an additional grind to have it maxed out (if it's reasonably finite) or you just end up being at constant and unending disadvantage versus pilots who played more than you (pilot skills makes their mechs better than yours because pilot skills). Bad for new players, bad for balance, bad for fair competition. Bad overall.

I think it would actually feel weird to have multiple pilots because that begs the question: Who is commanding them? Something people forget from previous MW games is that your "other pilots" were there because they were AI-controlled lancemates that you gave orders to rather than having direct control over.
Your main protagonist of the campaign, however, was always one specific character that you couldn't swap out. Like, for example, you (the main hero) were always Spectre in MW4 Mercs regardless of whether you had Mustang or Falcon as a lancemate. In MW3 you were always Connor Sinclair. Etc.
That, and it creates the weird notion that you the player are not actually one of the pilots, because you are possessing control of multiple different dudes at different times. Instead, you are now a disembodied ghost instead of a specific character. It's like reading a novel in first person perspective ("I") versus third person ("He" "She" "They" etc.).
One pilot for your account that you can customize both the looks and stats of would be much better than being a ghost.

It's never been a problem for Mario Kart.

Isn't that just the same as dumping some quirks onto mechs?
not quite the same thing because the pilot can add his quirks to any mech.
I imagine it would work similar to leveling up crew in world of tanks.
Although it makes more sense in world of tanks because you have an actual tank crew of several people, not just one guy piloting

works fine for other games like dota2. you assume control of different characters in dota2, hows that any different?
theres really nothing weird about it.
the question is does it really add anything to the game? does it make the game more fun? im inclined to think not really...
when I think of ways to improve MWO, adding pilot personas isnt really one of them. theres far better ways to improve the games immersion factor.

If its badly done its even worse than 3rd person gameplay, it amounts to a 3rd person game. This is why almost no games except MMO's desperate to draw out play time have this as part of their game. It ruins the game in a very core way.
Again, that's if its done badly. This game may have little choice in the matter, but can make the best of it in my opinion anyway, if they go for a solid single character game and entirely ignore 100% like the plague, multiple characters play for a single player.
I still don't like it and may even be a huge mistake for other reasons entirely.
Games like ME: 2 have it possible to begin the game with new characters. But it isn't a part of design in any way other than purely replay ability.
