Just look through Jihad era and Dark Age era mechs. Also, any mech with HAG equipped on the prime variant.

Add Compact Fusion and XXL Engine and to the list.
Alll of these are more future than the upcoming FutureTech (not sure about the XXL - when it's in production).

Mech "swords" have to be one of the dumbest things thought of...Clubs and Hatchets/Axes make sense cause big blunt smash object. A Fine sword blade though....really? Not like we are driving tin cans and that the sword could still slice a tomato after a good hit.

TBF, it is called "sword" but it is built more like a machete. The edge is not fine.

which is always a good idea for durability and defeating heavy armor. oh wait....it's not?

yes and is also a hell of a lot more fragile, because of it, and actually were bad at defeating armor.
which is why axes, maces and picks were the weapons of choice (well, technically a pole axe, but I'm sticking to basic CQB melee here) for defeating such armor.
Go whack on a suit of gothic plate with a standard broadsword, or better yet, a Katana. You'll dent it up OK, and wear the hell out of your blade, and not uncommonly, break it.
Now go after the same suit of armor with a mace, or a battle axe. There is a reason many of the swords of the era were actually piercing weapons.

While true, as Bishop pointed out it is also more fragile as well as if you don't get your angle of attack right your blade will skip off doing next to nothing.... Not to mention that during the middle ages the go to weapon for Footmen fighting knights (and other Knights fighting Knights) was the War-hammer/Maul/Pick/Mace/Flail.... Swords were good against guys in cloth and leather, not so great against mail (chain) or plate.

I dont think its reasonable for PGI to rerig the animations of every mech in the game to make melee attacks

Yes, now look up how a vibro blade works.
A motor of some sort vibrates the blade so fast it heats up. Sound like it's going to be durable or even terribly effective against heavy armor?
