Was about to boot up MWO when I saw this is one sale on Steam, and thought to ask if any of you guys have gave this a run, and how it plays. I've a nice setup so that won't be an issue. I've looked at several times since it's release, and thought it looks nice enough and has some staying power. Also, am aware that one of the major problems a lot of players have with this kind of game is uber players that reign over others and if you don't conform or what not they wipe your camp with mega dinos or whatever. Just curious, thanks.

yeesh

For a second there, I was enjoying No Man's Sky, but then it hit me at how it's procedural generation is pretty damn good, but the game is a bit barren. Not even gonna touch on the main problem, the majority of players had with that game. They have been patching and updating the crap out of it, it seems as it plays very smoothly, but one does not readily recover from a flop launch.

Most of my units "regulars" are no longer such regular MWO players. Many a nights I go to see who's around to drop with, and they are all in a TS room playing ARK rather than MWO. They are all far more experienced gamers than I so it must offer something worthwhile as far as a gaming experience to attract so many of them...now going on several months.

Interesting, thanks Bud.

Ever since I set up my new rig, I haven't installed TS. I haven't heard from my unit in months....Posted Image

Just know that ARK requires a lot of maintenance. If you decide to take a break for awhile, your stuff may be gone through various forces of entropy built into the game.

Ark is fun but it comes in several flavors so you need to figure out what you want before you can really settle in and work. If you play at official rates you need to be prepared to treat it like a job, if you play on a slightly higher bonus server it is pretty good with a few friends, and if it is an insane modifiers server you need to be ready to deal with constant fights since people can be asses without any real repercussions.

It is a fun game, though the initial learning curve is a bit unintuitive since things can be picky with what they eat. Playing in a group can be some of the best fun you ever have though. Taking down giant dinosaurs with nothing more than a couple friends and gumption is extremely satisfying.

To give you an idea why I said that the standard rate servers are a job to take the largest land carnivore (Gigantosaurous) takes more than a full real day to complete, and requires constant resources to be trucked to it so it doesn't wake up in the middle of it.

ARK is excellent and has a lot of mod support. Also a lot of content. Could put a couple hundred hours in SO alone. MP is a bit more of an issue because existing players are in flying powered armor and T-Rex with lasers and you'll be punching trees and collecting rocks to make stone tools in your loin cloth.

However as a survival game it's pretty amazing. Visually stunning, you're trying to survive in a dinosaur covered world with nothing, slowly crafting your way from stone tools to metal up to complex fabrication, firearms (which still mostly just pisses big dinos off until you're talking high power sniper rifles and rocket launchers) and more.

You need foord, water, shelter, temperature regulation, health, etc. It's a good survival experience.

Sub Nautica was really fun. Really love underwater exploration type games and colossal sized sea creatures like the Leviathan and such.

The Forest is also worth a go. They basically finished the game but are still tacking on updates here and there. I completed The Forest a few months ago and damn, I'm not going to spoil the ending but sh*t really gets grim at the end.

It's **** over all. Not worth the cash until its fixed. The dev release new broken stuff and never fix the old. You can get the better stuff i nthe new dlc and bring it in the old dlc where the others cant have it. Theres a Crysis suit now, im serious, the trailer looks like a joke, the game is ******** like that.
The survival part is gone 20 hours into the game, then its grind grind grind.

Pros:

The world is beautiful, the shading and ambiance is top notch.
The fauna is great, dinosaurs trying to kill you.
If you like to build there is much to build
If you likea feeling of progression with unlock with every levelup there is limitless of that
You can tame dino and ride them if thats your thing.
Unless you trashtalk in global, no player interaction of values ever happens.
Exploration is awesome, its an old world and you get to discover it. isnt that fkin cool?

Cons:

Its a pve grinder wet dream and you're two years too late.
It can take days of uninterrupted play time to tame mid-high level dinos. Literally. You need to have people round the clock.
You fkup your tame, you have to start over.
Taming dinos takes all the excitement out of the game, gathering is dumb easy, nothing is dangerous anymore as you can avoid everything, moving around is fast and crossing the map on a bird takes no time.
Pvp is none existent beside tribes that grinded for years already.
Youll get wiped but never when you're online. Remember, Ark is a pve carebear wet dream.
Proverbial Skill is none existant, have better gear, its all that matters.
DLC are sold with better stuff that you can have on vanilla. People who own the dlc transfer between maps with their better stuff. The Ark devs really are, legally, ********.
Building is buggy as hell. you have to exploit(more like legal tricks) to get things done and it doesnt work half the time. Becomes frustrating real fast.
There is no wipe of anything, the game becomes incredibly laggy with everything in the world never getting wiped.
There is no wipe. finding a place for yourself is next to impossible.
There is no wipe, its a pve grinder wet dream and youre 2 years too late.
Private server have insane limitation. Like your friends cant be 100 meters away from you, they get dragged as you move.
The randomly generated map isntg working, it crashes after some times.
Official map are also buggy but less so. They really need to redo building mechanic.

Im forgetting a lot of stuff. If the solo part worked i woudlnt say no, dont get it. But it doesnt. It really sucks, the game is beautiful, just staring at it at different time of day in different part of the map would make it worth it 50% off but the devs dont deserve you. They dont fix **** they just keep adding more for the end game and it is invariably buggy. They even release paid dlc while still in beta/alpha and ofc its as buggy as the rest.

Thanks for that, I'm more of a solo player. Thought it might have a secure server for players that just want to experience the game, so it's good to hear there is something to that effect. Picked it up, and will see how it is. Thanks all.

ARK has its high points, but its a frustrating game, especially on the console.
Lots and lots of grind for resources, no destructable terrain besides the resources themselves.

IMO Minecraft still beats it.

Pretty looking, but not much going on for it IMO.

Mediocre at best IMO..

Play SP or coop, get cool stuff from workshop. It's not a good PvP game - at all.

SP/private server you can adjust the grind settings to suit. Start SP, turn resource gain and dino game speed up by like 3x or 4x. Leave health/damage at 1x across the board. Everything can/will kill you fast, gathering is time intensive but not stupid that way and you'll have a serious survival experience for a long time. It's so ******* hard to take things solo it removes that facet largely from the game - which is good.

If you're looking for a SP survival experience ARK is fun. I also strongly recommend 7 Days to Die for ultimate hardcore Minecraft style and I absolutely love Subnautica - very, very complex survival game in an underwater environment with great visuals and complex storyline in the background. Also a very well balanced progression.

Stranded Deep is visually stunning and a lot of fun but still early access. Osiris is also promising but very early access as well.
