It's one thing to be a new player, it's another to be utterly incapable of listening to advice and instructions. That's not new. That's stupid. And you can't cure stupid.

This right here is the heart of things. Potatoes aren't new players. They aren't poor players. They're the gorram stupid players. If you're trying and communicating I don't mind you doing badly because you're still trying. It's the people who are silent the entire match, ignore the map, ignore calls, and die pointlessly doing nothing of worth that are the problem.

In the time a direwhale needs to reach the frontline the locust player probably already dealt the first 100+ points of damage...

Hah, semi-fair. That said, a tater in a Locust is going to die a hell of a lot faster than one in an assault. Though I've only seen a scant few.

I said elsewhere that potatoes seem to gravitate to assaults, and I suspect a big part of why is because even total spuds don't feel good about themselves when they're in something that dies if it takes a single alpha to the face.

That said, I also don't play my Locusts as the MLas damage farmers that some people do. All SPLas (or LPLas on the 1V), used specifically to harass the usual legion of lurmboats and backline snipers, and later to go in and tie up enemies by running through packs of them.

That's honestly one of the best uses of the Locust in QP (beyond assassinating spud assaults who got left behind/decided to camp 800m away from the battle), abusing its speed and size to shatter the usually uncertain pug team cohesiveness by poking them and meep-meeping away.

As a person of Irish descent, I know the value of a potato, one of the most versatile items in any kitchen. In fact, I think I need to make potato pancakes for breakfast now.

You are such a noob potato warrior you gotta step up your potato game.... true potato warriors like myself make their potatoes into french fries, not pancakes. Potato warriors who have mastered french fries can move onto advanced potato warfare like garlic fries. If you want breakfast potatoes then you gotta go with hash browns (and none of those mushy half cooked hash browns either, gotta be fried to a crisp golden brown all over), as every potato warrior worth his salt knows that the best and most amazing form for all potatoes is having them fried, so unless you have a secret fried potato pancake recipe, which you then must immediately share (for uh proof that you have it... yeah proof...), then you gotta up your potato game.

If I were PGI, I would make it so whenever a dead player typed something in all-chat it posted their damage next to their name. That would shut a lot of these insulters up in a real hurry.

It would also give weight to those who die with twice as much damage as the next highest person. Honestly it would just help to be able to see how much damage you've done without having to die to find out. Why can't they give us that information when we check the scoreboard before the match is done?

Because Leaderboards can be just as misleading? Most Tryhards are also part of a team, which can massively skew stats. Do I care about epeen? Again, if I did, I wouldn't constnatly call myself average, to at best, high average. What I do find laughable is how often I see big meta-tryhard names in QP that don't seem to do near as well as their epeen posturing would make one assume, when forced to play solo.

You also note, I didn't say "all tryhards are blowhards", and make one of the usual overgeneralized disparaging statements commonly handed down from Mt Tryhard. Because I do see some who do carry, who do impress, no matter the setting.

But I've played enough with and against pretty much all the Forum Tryhards to say a significant number of them have not left me feeling they were the next Proton or Heimdelight, no matter their swagger, when I've encountered them. Also seen several 4mans from certain vocal teams fall pretty flat.

Gosh... hope your ears weren't burning there, Gas.

So yeah, a single match doesn't mean anything... but tbh, almost everything in one's stats is gameable, or at least skewed. I basically can only go by the average of what I actually see (and I've seen most of you often enough). On average, yup, high leaderboards show some consistency. Don't tell the whole tale, though. I can think of more than one notable on here that is realyl good at using the rest of their team as meatshields while they hang back and LRM, or Snipe, and while their stats at the end look pretty good, they've actualyl done blessed little to help the team. But apparently that is the divine right of being a Comp?
(I'll also note most of these Pros never remotely try to rally or direct the team, and in fact certain groups, including members of your own unit, frequently ignore the rest of the team, VOIP, etc. In which case? They got no place to say a damn thing after.)

And TBH? IDC if you are Proton or Heimdelight.... if you zig when you should have zagged, and got skragged? That round, at least, you got no place running your mouth about anyone else. Because you failed to do any better.

To address the "playing in groups thing" I can say that playing in a large group this weekend did wonders for my WLR, but left my Average match score and KDR less than what it is typically, because all we did was play light fast mechs and death ball the crap out of teams over and over again, with relatively even damage spread.

So what are you accusing members of my team of doing? Ignoring someone on VOIP? Can't actually argue that with such a vague reference, so cool I guess? Not entirely unbelievable, as quite a few pugcommanders are pretty clueless, but I'm not going to defend the honor of anyone bearing an NS tag, NS hasn't really been an exclusive access unit in the past, there is a pretty wide range of skill in NS, we've had guys who have played on trackballs and track pads, to deaf guys who are good players but are hard to coordinate with for obvious reasons. So yeah, unless you have a specific situation you want to discuss, I got nothing. Now if you were trying to shame me personally, then I would be happy to discuss your evidence through PMs so you don't have to worry about that pesky ol Name and Shame policy.

Not sure why my ears would be burning? I was pretty non-confrontational and non-elitist in my post, just saying somebody who took a wrong turn, or had to talk to his wife at the beginning of a match putting him in a bad position might get ganked early, **** happens. I would take leaderboard statistics much more seriously than a handful of bad matches. I know I personally suck when I am tired if I get flustered. I've gone a few matches in that state before I finally realize its not working out and its time to go to bed.

Can confirm, playing in large groups only inflates one stat, WLR. The rest tend to lower compared to solo carry queue. The more skilled people you surround yourself with, the harder it is to get amazing stats comparatively.

People are going to insult people and call them out on being blatantly stupid and dragging down their team with such levels of it. Potato is much less offensive than alternatives. I see no point in getting offended over small things, especially things that don't concern you. Maybe these potatoes should get offended, take it to heart, and git gud. Use hate from others as fuel to better yourself, don't just breakdown and cry because someone dislikes you, its weak.

There are frustrating potatoes, yes. The types who just make decisions so bad that even a new player should know not to make them after a few games. Horrible builds frustrate me more, but to be fair, the game does very little to encourage good builds - if anything, the stock builds from tabletop have the exact opposite effect.

That said, I hold deeper contempt for raging try-hards than potatoes. We all know the type: the ones who think MWO is "real life" or "should be unfair, like real war" or some other chest-beating idiocy that calls into question their grasp on reality. These are also usually the types who pick fights all the time, hate casual players, farm "stupid noobs," and offer no useful recommendations to new players, PGI, or anybody else. I'd argue they are more damaging than potatoes since a potato's negative effects end with the match, while the problems caused by try-hards have a wider impact.

yea, they love to talk about players not as good as themselves for a self-esteem boost. Rather than giving a hand and helping players grow

I hold onto the notion that terrible players drives away as many if not more players than driving away terrible players. I'd take quality over quantity. I know many people who have left or play very little because they constantly get teams full of players who can't aim, don't communicate, block people from returning to cover, have terrible trigger discipline, fire on teammates, and generally are horribly annoying to have as a teammate.

If I can improve potatoes so that they actually think as a player and become a joy to team with then that is fine, otherwise I'd be happier if they left the game and never came back so that they stop driving away good players.

One aspect of that W/L you're overlooking id's the effect to KDr. Sure you might not have as flashy of states as often, but losing means dying, which impacts KDr. Sure you might get 3 kills instead of 5, but you are also much more likely to stay alive, which trends KDr upward.

This is true, but you get less kills than you normally would in solo queue as well, so it isn't quite as simple as that.

Not going to name names. Just leads to denial, butthurt, justification and ends up obfuscating the point, which was not even NS-centric. As far as your unit? I'll say it's generally when I see your more notable members, that they act like a cone of silence. Offer to pair up, ask for input on a direction or tactic, and get..... Crickets. Hardly the only competitive group that apparently think the pugs are beneath notice, or simply there to be meat shields. But seldom do I see these premade groups actually even try to herd the cats.

Again, is it just your guys, or am I even saying NS ignores everyone, every time? No. But having been in drops in this account, and others, and seeing little to usually no attempt to guide the potatoes to not become potato salad..... It gets really old to get the smartass commentary either end of match in chat, or here on the forums.

*shrugs *

But hey, what do I know? Just another potato.

What name should anyone call "bad players" that doesn't violate one's safe space? People want to know.

Seriously though, I've seen enough derp from comp players... and while mistakes are always made, it's not in the order of magnitude worse than the average potato where squirrels get chased to the detriment of the entire team.

It's one thing to see a tactical mistake happen.. sometimes you make a (bad) decision that seems to sound like a good idea at the moment. Then again, with bad players... you see really fundamentally bad decisions performed routinely like it was a habit.

Rage is going to happen one way or another, but it's one thing to screw up.. it's another to think it's acceptable to not take responsibility for your own actions. Just saying.
