Summary, MWO (primarily Alex) was given the go ahead from Catalyst who currently hold the Battletech rights and are the source of the game's current lore and play development, to create an original mech. This isn't MWO 'making their own mechs' for greed, it was an honor given to Alex by Catalyst (from what I heard) for his concept work in MWO to date and to an extent PGI for finally reviving Mechwarrior as a series (as controversial as that may be) and keeping it running this long.

Let's not forget, the only other Battletech game around the same time that MWO attempted coming out was Mechwarrior Tactics by the same publisher which failed miserably.

There were alot of great ideas in Mechwarrior Tactics that should have been translated into MWO... same weapons of different manufacturers having different quirks, mechwarriors of different rank and skills etc

I think that if a tonnage bracket is severely unrepresented in the lore/game then we should fill the holes. New mech will be created in and for a fps environment. ie; dont suck in weird ways liek bad hitbox, bad hardpoints number/position... Good opportunity to make different and interesting variant.

But to answer op, its probably for MW5 reasons(story and whatnot) that the Roughneck was created. Also because they could. PGI wanted to leave a more permanent mark. Who else can say they added a new canon battlemech.

Well, reading everyone's posts so far, I wonder, if its to fill a gap, why aren't they inventing a mech to fill the clan's 87 - 97kph speed gap?? 87 is ridiculously slow and 97 (104) is too fast for my style... I need something in between and there isn't unless I betray over to IS which I will never do.

Roughneck is a great mech. Better than the Chameleon. Better than the new mechs introduced by the other Battletech PC games.

Oh, snap.

Yeah, why make up a new mech? Maybe because the dark age is crap and we want to flesh out some better time periods? But, hey, maybe the OP has a point. Maybe we should make this a dark age game so we can get the "newest" Mechs...?

Side note: By technicality due to the nature of MWO, it isn't so much 'canon' as it is an 'alternate universe (one in which Rassalhague will never perish and Mariks actually fight). So at this point, why not make up new ones? It's not like we are in the same universe... after all everyone has endo steel and hardly anyone uses Ferro.

Have to remember there is an entire BattleTech core rulebook that was published detailing how players can make their own custom units in the game. It's silly to be hung up on canon Mechs in a video game adaptation when the source material provides explicit rules in the tabletop game for creating and playing non canon designs.

Because any outfit that works in another company's IP wants to do something that is unique, theirs, and "adds" to the franchise. Basically for artistic ego. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.
