The thing is HMGs and MGs will still be worse than small pulse lasers.

With lights the game isn't all just DPS, it is hit and run.

True in most cases and certainly true enough in principle, which is why I think MGs aren't meant as a weapon for that role, they are a finisher weapon, a desperate, low heat low damage (decent potential with crits) most particularly meant for efficiently ending people in specific circumstances (running down/through a near death mech). Having no cooldown and minimal heat in its dps dispersal gives it enough viability as a weapon on paper (it just seems you need to have a whole bunch for that to be noticeable).

The higher damage lower range MG for example makes a potential combo for an srm boat, in conserving heat and missiles in circumstances that may require minimal damage, and for peeling out extra dps at your discretion.

It does seem like it would pair well with stuff, but the extremely low range and requirement to stare at the enemy is rather suicidal. It would disrupt the damage spreading that an SRM brawler would do if you were actually using them in a meaningful way. At 2 DPS it would take a full second of stare to deal 2 damage, usually an SRM brawler would only stare at the enemy aboud half a second, at that point you'd deal about 1 damage compared to an IS SPL's full burn or 2/3s of the CSPL's burn, 4 damage in either case. You'd generate heat but would deal 4 times the damage in that time while also weighing less due to no ammo requirement so you could bring more heatsinks which would supplement your lasers and your missiles. Not to mention the lasers having a longer range.

With C-SPL boats you get about 1.5 seconds of stare on the enemy when firing the SPL groups so the HMG gets about 3 damage off in that time, making it somewhat useful but still it is up in the air over whether you'd want to bring heatsinks to get that one extra blast off with the SPLs or the HMGs to increase burst damage and have a no heat option when overheating.

Yeah but the potential for dealing with certain circumstances and fulfilling that role of constant (and high crit chance by numbers) dps, the idea of having to face a target to utilise DPS isn't always a bad thing, you aren't always the prime target for one, and the idea is it wouldn't be your main damage dealing/armor stripping and twist friendly weapon, it would be your finisher and dps between CD gun, you could pack minimal ammo in mind of this circumstantial nature too.

yeah and SPL will always be meta for lights

but I still think the MG is gonna have to be nerfed to make way for the HMG

PGI told us in the past that if they made the MG do more than 1 dps for 0 heat it would be too good. So theres no way theyre gonna add a HMG that does 1.5 dps for 0 heat.

The gun itself isn't really one that works to promote "good" play either in most cases particularly if considered as a primary weapon with the need to face for full DPS (promoting charging close range and just face tanking in concept if considered a main or only weapon), so it is understandable that they wouldn't try to buff it such a degree except in cases of flavor/uniqueness.

ACs and particularly AC2s perform that 'gatling' or machine gun role so much better visually and in practice, but the weight gap between MGs and ACs is phenomenal. I think I'd prefer AC1s if they could be made weight viable, which, going by the weight drop of rates in ACs wouldn't be great.

I always wanted more diverse torso omnipods for EBJ and have said in the past I would pay money for them. But leaving the unique ballistic pod for the hero only "because it's a disadvantage as it protrudes out" is a dirty lie. This hero will remain a best seller for sure, just because you can't get these pods elsewhere and it's a pretty big deal.
