I don't think it's so much that PGI can't allow custom decals but that they don't want to because... well... people are going to do stuff like put penises and such on their 'mechs. Every multiplayer game in the past that I've seen allow custom decals has this issue.

There´s a bar and a dot decal, also there are letters. It´s not like the penis door had´nt already been opened.

Go play Battlefield 4. Even though they don't allow free-form decals like in Armored Core, you'd be surprised at what some people can do with the shapes and designs available to them, including the rather vulgar and unnecessary decals I'm sure you'd rather not come across lol.

Penises are just a small part of it. Allowing free use of custom decals opens up REALLY bad legally actionable stuff (like child porn and torture). It's not worth the risk for any online game.

That game was also single player, just saying. And the main interesting part of that series is mech customization. If they didn't let yo do it there would've been consequences. While here its the "tactical" combat.

Who cares, it was sinlge player. Do you want me to either download thousands of custom decals to my limited capacity SSD or conversely repeatedly load custom non-local content into a temporary cache? That just delays the game loading promptly.

I was going to link you a picture of a couple Armored Core custom emblems, made with nothing but shapes, but virtually all of them are not safe for work. As such, google the following:

"armored core 5 custom emblems"

I mean, many are downright incredible how well they were made, considering all they had to make them with were various shapes. Given the right tools, humans can create anything.

PGI could allow custom decals but then theyd have to have someone approving each one to make sure its not inappropriate. I imagine they dont want to waste someones time like that.

Primarily this, and the concern of litigation. If something gets past approval, and it's someone else's intellectual property, PGI would be in very hot water for using someone else's material without permission.

The additional bandwidth and storage of downloading thousands of decals would be a real drain for the majority of people who aren't interested in looking at penii or hentai on Battlemechs.

Or have a monthly contest for user created decals to be implemented every month. The winners would get their decal in the game (with credit to them in the tooltip; "Decal by pilotX"), win MC and/or get a portion of MC sales of their decals back.

Custom decals is a bad idea. There's gonna be people making decals of penises and vaginas. I'm already seeing people put curse words on their mechs with the letter decals.

Or just like in Team Fortress 2, if you see inappropriate / offensive decals you can ss it and report them so they can remove it or also make punishment for those who breaking the custom decals CoC.
