Edit:
That said, with alternating MASC and jump jets, you can keep a mech moving faster than it should, for longer than it should. It isn't very efficient, however.

although on heavier mechs like executioner they're very useful for positioning, on mediums (ala shadowcat) it's invaluable...
More than enough times MASC has saved my life, and it gives you a competitive edge on certain points within your team (like snagging power cells, getting to high cover you can't reach with standard speed, etc)...
You may feel its useless, but MASC provides burst maneuverability that really lets you add flexibility into your mix.

And that's far more noticeable on heavier mechs than lighter ones.

If I could modify my SHC like a BattleMech, I'd be much more likely to rip out 2-4 JJs before I touched the MASC. Forget increasing the engine, I want MOAR GUNZ!

I wouldn't personal just to up the engines by two tons not enough to sway me, but it's invaluable mobility tool for some mechs and grant some advantages needed to keep ahead of your enemy when the situation demands it. While not noticeable on light to mediums mostly but the sudden boost in agility especially when built for brawling will help you alot in the long run, for heavier mechs like my Executioners with dual highmounted ppcs it make peeking and poking easier as I can burst up from a hill and burst down from one.

Try using it to peek around corners than move back into cover in a moment's notice.

Totally not worth it compared to the speed burst of the MASC, and that's not even touching it's other, much more appreciable benefits.
Kodiak Spirit Bear + XL 400 + MASC + brawler build = a 100 tons monstrosity that can burst run at 95 kph, twists like a leaf in the wind, a wrecks faces.
The main point of MASC is not the speed, as others have said before me, it's the maneuverability options.

Either the reticle shake needs to be removed or the duration needs to be increased by 5-10 seconds.
MASC either needs to be a 10 second speed/maneuverability boost that you can actually use during combat (i.e. no reticle shake) or it needs to be a 15-20 second speed/maneuverability boost that cant be used during combat (i.e. keep the reticle shake but increase the duration).
The way it is now is garbage on virtually all mechs (except maybe the spirit bear). The shadowcat for example would still be better off if its MASC tonnage and locked jumpjet tonnage was dumped into its engine instead. the locked equipment and locked engine rating is doing the shadowcat zero favors.

so MASC is good on one mech. Its bad on every other mech that has it.

I remember seeing them running past my Mech and me thinking what the heck was that
I later picked up a free SB and the masc was way better then the one on my EXE
Later the SB's masc was toned down and its just like the EXE
Which is pretty lame (some people would say Balanced)

Use it when:
1.Rounding corners.
2.Turn on a dime.
3.boost your JJ's.
4.Peekaboo over hills in a hurry.
5.Strafing back and forward making it hard for you target to hit you.
6.Can be used as a speed boost getting from A to B, but other uses are better.
