Lemme run down the list of how awesome this was.

....That was it. No shake, no popcorn, no other audio cues what-so-ever... It was as flat as could be. I hate to say it but it was perhaps the most peaceful, serene and uneventful thing in the entirety of the 30 or so seconds I was being shot at, as it seemed even the enemies weren't shooting at me at the time.
Literally nothing but a single statement gave me the indication that an explosion had occurred. There certainly was no boom.

Trouble is I didn't die. I just turned around and started shooting back until I had nothing left but a Gauss Rifle and walked away.

Oh my god...
I was holding it together pretty good..
"Small laser destroyed.."
....
"Why did you take it anyway?"
I couldn't hold it anymore.
Up until then all I could think of was this old one I did. So many flaws kept me from sharing it around, but...
Now there's nostalgia in how the game was. Sadly those pulse lasers sounded terrible.
Anyway, this is a pretty damn big issue. 5 to 6 years and they still can't get it to be as good as the original.
Sadly now I can't even find the one where the SRM Awesome is running around and gets an ammo explosion with the popcorn. Three successive shakes and popping sounds of ammo starting to cook off before the damage begins spreading. That's what I miss and would have expected. But instead there was absolutely nothing.

Meh.
But I can't hear it.
I can't "feel" it with any kind of shake or anything.
What good is just a particle effect if there's no oomph to it?
It feels like the Red Faction pistol... after you mute it.
Compare not the LMG, but the assault rifle and SMG soon after... and you'll get an idea of what I was hoping for.

A while ago myself and a few others kicked up a fuss about the lack of any ammo explosion effects. We determined there was a unique particle effect that played when ammo went up (a larger blast of sparks than normal, though easily lost in the normal explosion GFX), but absolutely nothing else. No sounds or "feeling" inside the cockpit.
Someone from PGI noticed and mentioned it would be looked at for the next patch...
And then all we got was a BB alert instead of what we were after.

I've seen my torsos sparkling on uac5 ammo explosion before, followed by a boom. So I can attest there is animation for it

It's not a strawman. It's a lamentation that the graphics and some mechanics of closed beta were so much better than what we have today. You'd feel the same way too if you were here then.

I actually was (with a different account which's name has been lost to the cruel currents of time) and i remember the game looking much better, with proper IK, PPC bolts lighting up the sky, heck, even the sound effects were better!

There used to be popcorn along with screenshake about 4 years ago but I dunno why PGI decided to remove it.
