Yes, its interesting to note that the cockpit of a Timberwolf is actually ripped off off a B52 bomber and the cockpit of a warhawk is actually a heavy hauler truck. Originally, the shadowhawk from robotech is a rip off of the F14 tomcat too.

I think I remember the devs talking once about how the Viper was modelled off of some helicopter, too. Also I'm pretty sure that Alex Iglesias uses real world vehicles, quite often, as references for his work. Personally I think it really adds that bit of grounding in reality that the franchise needs to keep itself from becoming another overstylized anime mech game.

As for things that look like things though, the raven must have been a helicopter at one point. Actually lots of mechs look like helicopters and airplanes.(naturally, since they have the canopies and windscreens already)

The B52 was ahead of its time. The B52 cockpit was made to look like the cockpit of a Timberwolf.

The master models have probably been kitbashed from military scale model kits, which were much more easily available than sci fi model kits back in the day.

I also remember reading about the use of zoids here and there.

Parts of the original X-Wing model, were taken from model kits of military vehicles, and one in particular was the Bismarck or the Tirpitz.

Other games also show it, though this one is quite ugly and is in need of redesign.

What in the world is that hideous monstrosity? That thing even makes the lore Rakshsas a look good.

Or is it the accidental lovechild of the Rakshasa creators redneck cousin?
