Is anyone answering questions?

Do you need a "total set" of nodes for them to work? And how can you tell which is which?
no, you get the benefit of the nodes you select. the "full benefit" in the notes means that you cannot get 10% range boost unless you actually select all of the nodes to get 10% range boost, even if that means selecting other nodes you don't want.

So theres more customization but it takes a while to get it right for your setup and style. Ok fine., but I still don't like having to unlock nodes that I don't want so I can get to ones I do. Also there should be a higher node cap, not much higher but a few, 110ish would be good.

In the long run, its probably a good thing, but they really needed to test this a lot more and then listen to feed back and make adjustments before pushing it on everyone and thinking they will fix things as they go, but I shouldn't be surprised, its what they always do.

Why pay testers when we already have testers that pay us? So what if we lose a few people due to imbalance. Any press is good press, especially when free, because it brings in new players, even if only for a short time, who will spread the word of blake even more.

Skill tree has made me lose all interest in the game. I am usually ok with the things pgi does, and came into it with a fairly neutral position. After looking at it, I lost all the excitement I had for javelin release. Slept on it and today decided to try and cancel my preorders. I'll check back in a few months to see if this has gotten better. Shame after sinking a lot of money into the game, and plans to put even more money in.

I played around with it last night, and for the most part I'm content with the system. Too many clicks considering I choose the same 50 or so nodes for every mech, but it's decent.

The respec cost, however, is still the worst aspect. It's enough of an investment to dump a two dozen SP into a tree to just test it out, but then to have to pay XP to switch back once I'm done experimenting is complete garbage. We shouldn't be penalized for simply navigating the skill maze.

As evidenced by this thread, some people hate it, others love it - but why?
From my perspective? The general direction of a skill tree isn't bad.
My issue is with the way it was implemented here - form over function with confusing, clunky and convoluted interface for which user experience was clearly a tertiary consideration (if it was one at all), no attempt to capitalize on more interesting possibilities (think about inferno SRMs as a skill node, or a node that buffs the PPC anti-ECM effect).and reduced distinction between chassis (it wouldn't be hard to give them "specialty" trees that would replace offensive quirks entirely).

Cutting this down to maybe 1/3rd of the current amount of nodes might produce a more practical result.

Im finding good and bad in the skill tree so far as in my TBR-C-S steam mech died like it has no engine to putting massive skill points in to survival that in truth I don't survive any longer than before to low of % of armor bonus for all the SP.

The one bright spot is putting points into modules nodes like radar derp-Advanced Zoom-Seismic-ETC.I did not buy many modules at all in the old system so it is great to use them and see they actually work.

But im finding a lot of the nodes I put SP into don't really do anything in actual gameplay as far as I can tell.

So im trying hard to find a reason to say YAY this is a great thing and keep playing MWO the cost to exchange gxp or historic points is a little to high as I figured to level all my basic mechs to mastered because there pretty useless under 91 SP points would require 6 months to a year as much as I play to get all 64 mechs there and that's if I don't buy any more mechs and just grind C-bills with no premium time.

PGI REALLY needs to either give us one free respec for each mech, or let us play a few games with the skills before our selections become permanent, even if it just in the testing grounds (look at HOTS' 'TRY' feature).

Even following the topic from the first PTS I didn't expect so much hate for the change. I agree that there are many problems, but on the other hand the UI was a piece of dung and so the tree part of it is a logical continuation of it development.

Regarding complaints about killing the motivation to experiment by taxing skill respec.
Have no idea what the HOTS is or the system implemented, but a good thing to do is to implement a mech specs trial system in a following fashion:
  • Allow respeccing the mech for free to to take it out to testing grounds likewise you allow to view not purchased mechs in the mechlab and try fit alternative configs.
  • Allow to make a trial config for owned mechs for free all the way up to 91 SP and take it out for a ride to QP match with one condition: you do not receive any rewards (C-Bills or XP) for the match!
Later when it is obvious how the second option may be misused you can introduce some limitations to using it.

What you guys think of possible problems with this solution?

I'd say being able to run it in the testing grounds at no investment is the minimum that should happen. Ideally there's no respec cost period -- I guess it depends on why PGI feels like they need that XP sink, and if there's a less painful way to reallocate it.

Support can do that, if the customer is insistent enough.

Also consider PGI will probably be tweaking the nodes and their values, so even if you're not changing your build you'll probably want/need to respec at some point in the future.

They'll eventually have to offer some sort of free respec mechanism because of this since if the trees are broken or exploited and they have to retool things, they will not want to face an sh-storm for people having to redo their trees *and* paying to do it.

HOTS = Blizzard Entertainment's Heroes of the Storm (MOBA)

In HOTS, they have heroes that you can purchase to battle with. The heroes in HOTS can be purchased with in-game currency (earned or purchased with real money). The good thing about HOTS is that you can "TRY" out any hero on a testing ground for free and while you are trying them, you can test out different skill builds and level the hero up to see how it works at max level before you decide to buy the hero or not.

Well.. Game just broke for me. Deal breaker. I spent 300+ million on modules for 50 mech's (120 million just in target depp modules) and only got back a fraction of that money. I got back less then 1/2.
I was stunned. I felt robbed. 4 years of investing.. maybe 200+million in C bills just gone to who knows where.
So at first i was just depressed that I lost all those C bills.
Then I opened the skill tree and become lost. Completely lost.
I had no idea how to start and get back to where I was. I couldn't tell if I still have mastery on any of my mechs. All 50 of my mechs WERE mastered. NOW none are I think.. I'm crushed.
I don't even know how to help anyone I know, we'll all now wondering if we want to bother with all the work and planning it will take to redo all 50 mechs.
If i were a child I would have started to cry, not just from how much I feel I lost in C-bills

Making a post like this on the forum is the "adult" version of crying FYI.

All of the mechs that you have levelled (even mechs that you have levelled and sold) will have Historic XP on them, which can be converted in part, or all to XP which can be used to unlock skill points that can be used for that specific mech. For instance, my Griffin 1S had enough historic XP on it that I was able to buy 91 skill points and max it out (equivalent to mastering + Modules).

Yea..crying is the word.

I don't care about stupid Historical points.. thats not C bills!

I want ALL my C bills back. ALL of them.. not some.. not part.

And if crying about being robbed is bad...then I don't know.

No, there isn't more customization. There's less, because there is less viable playstyles. Increasing TTK correlates with the loss of the assassin playstyle. Pushing people to the safe high dps playstyles because the risk vs reward becomes nonviable.
