MWO is a FPS - albeit a niche type of FPS - different enough where it can draw in new players simply due to the niche'iness of the title. An FPS doesn't need a skill-tree where the main claimed rational is "Diversity".
The only diversity that exists in this game is:
1) How fast do I want to move
2) How long do I want to survive
3) How much pewpew do I want to pewpew
You choose your loadout based off of those three points. That's it.
Claiming "Diversity" through a poorly designed gate-tree is a slap in the face to anyone who has the ability to think for themselves that doesn't assume the mantle of "White Knight" just because they like the history of BattleTech and will suck the Devs because they're afraid of the title going away.
Aside from the obvious b.s. marketing claim of "Diversity", the undertone of the change to the game is to throttle player progression in an attempt to lengthen the average play duration of a casual gamer (in terms of sticking with the title and active gaming) and to encourage more MC purchases for packs and/or premium time.
Is that an assumption on my part? Maybe.
If you look at the history of the decisions regarding gameplay and balance that have been made over the years one can glean that there is truth to that claim.
- Why would they reduce the average C-Bill earning by over 40% a few years ago?
- Why did they stagger the release of clan tech in such a way that it clearly and bitterly divided the playerbase and drove toxicity levels to amazing heights?
- Why was the Rule of Three even a thing?!?!?
- Why is a gate-tree being added to the game that requires you to waste SPs unlocking useless nodes in order to get something you actually need?
- Why does it now require C-Bills on top of experience to obtain a SP?
- Why did you initially claim that players would get a full refund for their modules and then go back on your statement and anger a significant portion of the community. A portion of the community you rely on for income. (Seriously, why?)
Change for the sake of change is not so good. Lying about the reasoning for the change is worse.
TLDR; PGI will PGI... /shrug
