I got it because I thought it's exactly what I needed. I mean, 1 extra second to stead aim and fire... not bad, right?

But in actual experience, what I found myself doing more than ever is that after my initial target fade in and out of cover, I have to wait an extra second to wind down before I can wind up.

Like I understand the intent, but it's definitely got a downside.

What are your experience with the gauss charge skill?

And if it's more harmful than good, should it be replaced with something else? (reduce charge-up time, perhaps?)

Handicap. I release my gauss trigger too early way more often than too late. If I'm holding it 'til it expires it's because I didn't want to take that shot. I don't want to extend that time.

Yeah when I first saw this I assumed it was for a _reduction_ in gauss charge time.

Giving you longer to hold it down is pointless and a waste of nodes.
