~2 minutes into the match.
I was standing on a hill.
Not a single scratch on my Mech.
Saw a PPC rushing towards me from afar (actually a dual-PPC as it turned out via chat afterwards)
...
And my Mech fell over.
Instant reaction:

I was in my 2 lpl Shadowcat, flanking on Frozen City (The new one) and saw another Shadowcat sniping from a ridge. so I fired both my lpls dead center into his rear CT, and I get a headshot kill.
The second one was typical. Mech shut down in front on my ACH, so I just aimed and splat.

A Dragon face tanked my Atlas. I pulled the trigger. Got the pop-up notice. And thought: "Oh. That's cool."

I think I have died to 2 headshots personally and made 1 kill with headshots, so its not like its hugely common but still, they end up working so weirdly in this system, either an instakill or wasted damage.
I agree. That's why I picked that gif. When that tank blows up, it's just a weird coincidence, it wasn't something Tom Hanks did.
Likewise, most headshots in MWO are accidents, for 99% of the population. Which is why they're usually followed by accusations of aimbot, because almost no one can consistently get headshots on moving targets. Getting a clean headshot in CounterStrike makes you feel like Blondie in The Good, the Bad & the Ugly. It's a great feeling.

Im not that good but I also tend not to aim for the head too much either. I have difficulties getting my damage to register on heads even when I think I have hit it :S

- First enemy contact is made, and I take a snap shot with 2 PPC's from my Awesome at it - and I suddenly get the kill message?! Nothing in the game dies to 20 damage, so I asked over general chat if that was a headshot. The victim replied, "Yes..." I then asked how I killed him with only 20 points of damage. Turns out he removed all but 1 point of cockpit armor! Well, it was a Locust, so I guess weight savings. I couldn't do that again if I tried.
- The second one had me in an Awesome 8Q with 3 PPC's. We're on Polar Highlands, and I'm coming around a corner just as a King Crab swivels around on me to blast me to scrap. 3 PPC's later - all to the cockpit - and he's dead. Yes, he probably had a bit of cockpit damage earlier, but it was satisfying to kill him when he had the upper hand in theory.

Old Forest Colony, brawl near the arch and late in the game. I'm in my trusty dual gauss ilya, armor stripped and I'm mostly wrecked. A fresh spider comes flying over the top of the arch, I swing up and fire. Dead spider. Dude starts raging in all chat about how da F did he get headshotted while in mid air.
Couldn't repeat it if I tried 100,000 times.
Pretty sure most of my other early headshots were arty strikes. Remember that nonsense?

I go with ARMAs wasteland mod for my sniping fulfillment.
My personal best was killing a guy from 1.1 kilometers out while he was scouting with his binoculars.

But yeah I made a suggestion about headshots having their functionality changed to simply making the hits on the "cockpit" region inflicting extra damage directly to the torso. At least in that case it wouldn't be so all or nothing, plus it works as a better "critical hit" system IMO, but thats another story

Although that was technically the second headshot I got, the first one was on an enemy Hellbringer who shut down in front of mine firing away with his last laser. But the jumping Shadow Cat is a better story. The pilot was a pretty good sport about it, too-I was just as surprised.

I typically try for headshots if I spot a target moving in a predictable pattern, especially on certain mechs, especially if I have dual gauss.

Because artillery was OP and just randomly cockpitted people all the time.
Can't remember my first legit headshot, though. But I can remember a match on old Terra Therma where I cockpitted two fresh Hunchback 4P's in a row with dual gauss Timber. They weren't even shutdown, first one was a lucky shot, and the second one was a potato and staring at me.

I haven't played in a few months, but I always saw a few people trying for headshots. And some people would get them.
In my opinion, they were far too rare. I would have preferred huge cockpit armour quirks for certain mechs, rather than thimble-sized cockpit hitboxes.

How it made me feel;

I then headshot a Jenner in the same match when it decided it wanted to give me a hug.
How that one made me feel;
